MADISON, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - In downpour rainy conditions, the Green Bay (2-9-3, 0-3-2 HL)
men's soccer team battled the in-state rival Badgers (5-6-3, 1-2-0 Big Ten) before
falling 3-0 at McClimon Soccer Complex Wednesday evening in Madison, Wis.
The Badgers took a 1-0 lead in the
first half before adding two goals in the second to seal the shutout victory
over the Phoenix.
With 19:28 to play in the first half
Wisconsin's Jerry Maddi put the Badgers on the board with his second goal of
the season and the 1-0 advantage.
With seven minutes remaining in the
first half, Green Bay goalkeeper Max Nimmo (Janesville, Wis.) was substituted
into the game for senior keeper Ryan Wehking (St. Louis, Mo.) who had three
saves in the half.
The Badgers controlled the majority
of the first half but the Phoenix took advantage when it had possession of the
ball as both teams finished the first half with eight shots and one corner kick
each. Wisconsin closed the first half with four shots on goal while Green Bay
had three.
Less than three minutes into the second
half with rain picking up, Wisconsin boosted its lead to 2-0 when Maddi found David
Caban who beat Nimmo in the box for the goal.
With 17 minutes remaining in the game,
the Badgers' Chris Prince stole the ball from the Phoenix and passed ahead to
Nick Janus for the empty net goal, sealing the 3-0 win.
Both teams finished the game with 12
shots and three corner kicks each. Green Bay midfielder Ahmad Bah (Brooklyn
Park, Wis.) played an aggressive game while leading all players with four
shots.
NEXT ON THE SCHEDULE... Green Bay will wrap up regular season play with a pair of Horizon League
games on its home field. The Phoenix hosts UIC Saturday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. at
Aldo Santaga Stadium before having a week to prepare for its final game of the
season against Cleveland State Saturday, Nov. 3 at 1 p.m.
