CLEVELAND, Ohio
(GreenBayPhoenix.com) - For the second-straight
time on the road, the Green Bay women's soccer team battled into the second
overtime against a Horizon League opponent. On Wednesday night, the Phoenix (3-8-1,
0-2-1 HL) unfortunately came out on the wrong side of the result when a 102nd
minute goal by Cleveland State (4-8-0, 1-2-0 HL) sent the Phoenix to a 1-0
double overtime loss.
In the second half and first overtime, Green Bay held
an 8-5 advantage in shots, including a 3-0 margin in the first 10 minutes of overtime
when Elise Olson (Madison, Wis.), Renee Therrien (Winnipeg, Manitoba) and Megan Braatz (Waukesha,
Wis.) fired shots. Olson and Therrien had shots on goal, but CSU keeper Sarah
Wood was there for the saves.
Cleveland State sent the Phoenix home with the
heartbreaking loss early into the second overtime, when the Vikings scored off
a corner kick. Jaime Avona got her head on the corner kick from Vickie Havas
and found the back of the net.
Green Bay head coach Trevor Warren was disappointed to see his team fall in
heartbreaking fashion, especially since he felt the Phoenix played extremely
well.
"I'm bitterly disappointed for our team," said Warren.
"They did everything they could and dominated Cleveland State from the
30-minute mark on. We were the better team in terms of possession, territory
and opportunities to score. Keeper Katy Pilarzyk (Madison, Wis.) had very little to do or saves to make. We played
one of the our best games of the year. Soccer can be a very cruel game."
Pilarzyk was forced to make just two saves in the
contest, with the Vikings only recording three shots on goal. Junior Hekla Palmadottir (Akranes, Iceland) and sophomore Hannah Kernen
(Belleville, Wis.) each led the Phoenix with two shots apiece.
Green Bay will next be in action at home on Saturday
at 1 p.m., hosting Youngstown State at Aldo Santaga Stadium in Horizon League
action.
