GREEN BAY, Wis.
(GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay
women's basketball team (8-2) will travel to Wichita, Kans., to play its final
nonconference road matchup of the 2012-13 season in a battle against Wichita
State (6-5) on Sunday, Dec. 30 with the tip set for 1:05 p.m. The Phoenix has
not played the Shockers since the 2002-03 season, and the two teams are split
in just two all-time meetings.
Green Bay is coming off a key
53-38 home win against Wisconsin, a game which saw the Badgers held to a
program-worst 10 points in the first half. In addition to limiting the Badgers
to just 38 points on the night, the Phoenix forced 25 turnovers and outscored
Wisconsin 38-6 in the paint. Redshirt senior Stephanie Sension (Hopkins, Minn.) led Green Bay with 13 points,
including a 1:04 stretch in the second half where she scored seven consecutive
points.
The win against the Badgers improved Green Bay to 2-0
against other in-state Division I teams this season, and the 25 Wisconsin
turnovers were just one shy of tying the season-high 26 forced at
Marquette on Dec. 8. The win over Wisconsin also improved Green Bay's
senior class to 4-0 against the Badgers.
Wichita State has won three straight and four of its
last five having last played in a 61-59 win at SMU on Dec. 22. The Shockers are
4-1 at home this season, with wins against UTSA, Grambling, Northern Colorado
and Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
Both Green Bay and Wichita State competed in the 2012
Cancun Challenge from Nov. 22-24, but did not face each other while south of
the border. The Phoenix went 2-1 with wins against Missouri and Richmond and a
loss to James Madison, while the Shockers went 0-3 against the same teams.
In two all-time meetings, Green Bay is split 1-1 with
Wichita State. The last meeting came during the 2002-03 season, a home win for the
Phoenix. The Shockers won the meeting at home the season prior.
Following Sunday's contest, Green Bay will ring in the
New Year with three straight home games, starting with its final nonconference
matchup of the season against St. Bonaventure on Jan. 5 at 2 p.m. The Bonnies advanced
to the Sweet 16 of the 2012 NCAA tournament before falling to eventual National
Runner-Up Notre Dame.
The Phoenix will open Horizon League play on Jan. 8
against Detroit, and remain at home to host Wright State on Jan. 12.

SENSION'S
NEW DIMENSION: Redshirt senior Stephanie Sension
continues to impress in her starting role this season after leading Green Bay
with 13 points against Wisconsin. The Hopkins, Minn. native is averaging 11.9 points
and 5.6 rebounds per game and also has a team-high six blocks. Averaging 27.1
minutes per game, Sension is also shooting 45.7 percent from the field.
ON THE ROAD
AGAIN: After playing consecutive home
games for the first time this season last week, Sunday's game at Wichita State will
be the seventh of 11 games this season that Green Bay will play away from home.
The Phoenix holds a 4-2 record in road or neutral site games this season.
DOWN-LOW DOMINANCE: Head coach Kevin
Borseth challenged his team to dominate the paint against Wisconsin, and
his players responded by outscoring the Badgers 38-6 in the lane. In the
previous game, the Phoenix tied a season high when it outscored North Dakota
State 46-16 in the paint. Green Bay has outscored opponents 314-192 in the
paint this season and has only been outscored once in the paint through 10
games. Over the previous three games, the Phoenix holds a 110-34 advantage down
low.
NEXT ON THE SCHEDULE: Green Bay will ring in 2013 with the nonconference
finale, a home contest against St. Bonaventure on Jan. 5. Horizon League play will
begin just three days after with the Phoenix hosting Detroit Jan. 8 and Wright
State on Jan. 12.
