GREEN BAY, Wis.
(GreenBayPhoenix.com) - After winning
its lone home game in a 30-day stretch, the Green Bay women's basketball team
(5-1) will hit the road yet again and travel to take on Central Michigan (2-4)
on Wednesday at 11 a.m. central time. This will be the second meeting between
the two teams this season, and also marks the first time Green Bay has made the
trip to Mount Pleasant since the 1989-90 season.
Last week the Phoenix played just its second home game
of the season, hosting then-No. 6 (D II) Indianapolis on Nov. 30. Green Bay
came away with a 64-52
victory over the Greyhounds in a historic night at the Kress Center. Senior
Adrian Ritchie (De Pere, Wis.)
drilled an open three from the wing to give Green Bay a lead it would never
relinquish, and became the 30th member of the Green Bay women's basketball
1,000-point club in the process. Ritchie finished the game with 16 points, a
season-high seven assists and a career-high six steals.
Green Bay played its home opener against Central
Michigan on Nov. 17, posting a 75-48
victory over the Chippewas. After a slow start early on, Green Bay used a
16-4 run late in the first half to build a double-digit lead by halftime. The
Phoenix had four players score in double figures, led by Ritchie who had a
double-double with a game-high 25 points and 10 rebounds.
Central Michigan has played top-25 opponents in each
of its previous two contests, first battling No. 5 Notre Dame at home on Nov.
29. After giving the Irish all it could handle, the team eventually fell 72-63.
On Dec. 2 the Chippewas then traveled to take on No. 14 Purdue and were handed
an 87-71 loss.
Green Bay will stay on the road for its final game this
week as the team travels to Milwaukee to take on Marquette on Saturday at 2
p.m. The Phoenix will then return home to play two consecutive home games for
the first time this season, starting with North Dakota State on Dec. 18.
NICE TO SEE
YOU AGAIN: The Phoenix had one of its
most productive offensive displays this season while hosting Central Michigan
on Nov. 17. In addition to Ritchie's double-double, redshirt senior Stephanie Sension (Hopkins, Minn.)
dropped 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds in her first-career home start. Seniors
Sarah Eichler (Grafton, Wis.) and Lydia Bauer (Lake Zurich, Ill.) both
had 12 points in the contest.
JOIN THE
CLUB: After battling the flu all of
last week, Ritchie overcame a slow start shooting in the game against
Indianapolis in historic fashion. With the majority of her first attempts of
the game falling short, Ritchie gutted it out to give the Phoenix the lead late
in the first half and put her name in the history books by the end of the
night. With 1,009 career points, Ritchie is the 30th member of the Green Bay
women's basketball 1,000-point club. She also posted a career-high six steals
in the contest.
WHERE ARE WE?: Wednesday's game at Central Michigan marks the first
time Green Bay has played in Mount Pleasant since the 1989-90 season-before the
majority of the Phoenix roster was born. In that meeting, the Chippewas
squeaked out a 53-52 win over Green Bay. Today's game will be the seventh
meeting all-time between the two teams with Central Michigan holding a 4-2
series lead. The Phoenix has won two straight in the series, first a home
blowout during the 1993-94 season followed by this season's meeting on Nov. 17.
NEXT ON THE SCHEDULE: Home games have been hard to come by for Green Bay
this season. After Wednesday's game, the Phoenix will play at Marquette on
Saturday at 2 p.m. before returning home to host North Dakota State on Dec. 18
and Wisconsin on Dec. 23.
