CLEARWATER, Fla.
(GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay softball team (1-5) opened spring
break competition with the Under Armour Showcase held in Clearwater, Fla. The
Phoenix finished the opening day of play dropping its first two games in its
annual spring break road trip. Green Bay battled tough in its first game,
falling 4-3 to Rutgers before being shut out 3-0 by Fordham.
GAME 1 - Green Bay 3,
Rutgers 4 - After jumping out to an early 2-0 lead, the Phoenix fell 4-3
against Rutgers in a tight opening game.
The Phoenix came out hot scoring two runs in the first
inning. With two outs, junior Danielle Peerenboom (Appleton, Wis.) stepped up
to the plate in a big way. Peerenboom tripled to right center field earning an
RBI double while scoring Shannon Butts (Greenfield, Wis.) and freshman Hailey Mohrfeld
(Menomonee Falls, Wis.) for the 2-0 advantage. Green Bay closed the opening
frame with two runs off two hits.
With one out in the bottom of the third, Rutgers tied the
Phoenix with two RBI's. The Scarlet Kings later took the lead off a wild pitch
for the 3-2 advantage.
Green Bay responded with an unearned run from sophomore Miranda
Reinke (Milwaukee, Wis.) in the fourth inning tying the game up 3-3. The
Phoenix closed the inning with one hit, one run, one error while stranding one
runner.
After two-and-a-half scoreless innings, Rutgers scored the
winning run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh on an unearned run.
Green Bay finished the game scoring three runs on seven hits
while sophomore Ashley Nannemann (Burlington, Wis.) pitched a complete game, striking
out three batters.
GAME 2 - Fordham 3,
Green Bay 0 - Butts hit a double into right-center field in the bottom of the
fourth inning before Peerenboom hit a sacrifice bunt, advancing Butts. With one
out and Butts on third, the Rams struck out the Phoenix before Amanda Omahen
(San Diego, Calif.) grounded out to third to end the inning.
After four scoreless innings, Fordham led off the fifth
inning with a triple into right center. The Rams later scored on an RBI single for
the 1-0 lead. With two outs in the top of the seventh inning, Fordham scored
two runs on an RBI double for the 3-0 advantage heading into the final frame.
The Rams retired the side for the shutout win.
Green Bay will face Canisius Saturday, Mar. 10 at 9:15 a.m. before
battle Western Michigan at 11:30 a.m. in the second day of the Under Armour
Showcase.
