GREEN BAY, Wis.
(GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Junior Allison Goecks (Beloit, Wis.) took a
no-hitter into the final inning of game one, sparking a 4-1 win over Butler as
Green Bay (14-17, 3-5 HL) split a Horizon League doubleheader with the visiting
Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon at Ben Garot Field. Butler won a back and forth nightcap
in 10 innings, downing the Phoenix 9-7.
In the two contests, senior Amanda Omahen (San Diego, Calif.) went 5-for-6 from the plate,
including 4-for-4 in the second game, drove in four runs and scored three
times.
The two teams will conclude the three-game series on
Sunday at Garot Field with first pitch slated for 12 p.m.
Game 1:
Green Bay 4, Butler 1
In support of Goecks' strong pitching on the mound,
Green Bay's offense jumped out early on the Bulldogs with three runs in the
second frame. Stacey Butts
(Greenfield, Wis.) opened the inning with a walk but still stood at first after
a pair of outs. After a hit by pitch put two runners on, Omahen tripled to
right center field to give the Phoenix a 2-0 lead. Senior Amanda Pozolinski (Appleton, Wis.) followed by driving a double off
the wall for a 3-0 edge.
Junior Danielle Peerenboom (Appleton, Wis.) added a run to the Phoenix line with a solo
home run to center field. The homer was Peerenbom's first of her junior
campaign.
Goecks took it from there, cruising on the mound
through the first six innings. Heading into the seventh frame, the junior had
retired the last nine Bulldog hitters in order.
After retiring the first batter in the seventh on a
flyout, Goecks finally allowed her first hit on a bloop single by Butler's
Mallory Winters. The Bulldogs would tack on a run to spoil the shutout before
the Green Bay defense ended the game with a double play.
In the complete game, Goecks allowed two hits and one
run while striking out seven and walking four to improve to 5-5 on the season.
Game 2: Butler
9, Green Bay 8 (10)
Butler jumped out early in the second game of the
twinbill, scoring four runs off Goecks in the opening inning. Ashley Nannemann (Burlington, Wis.) entered in relief and began to quiet
the Bulldog bats with four scoreless frames.
Nannemann's effort helped the Phoenix rally, beginning
with two runs in its half of the first inning. Alli Rivera (Geneseo, Ill.) had the first of her three hits in the
game with an RBI single while Shannon Butts drew a bases-loaded walk.
The Phoenix tied the game in the fourth inning when
Rivera laced a two run double into the gap in right-center field, scoring both
Omahen and Peerenboom. Rivera was 3-for-5 in the game with three RBI.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Green Bay made it
seven unanswered runs with a three-run frame. Paige Newtols (Green Bay, Wis.) singled in the first run for the
lead before Omahen ripped a two-run single to left field for a 7-4 lead.
The Phoenix lead was still 7-5 entering the top of the
seventh with Green Bay looking to complete the doubleheader sweep. However, two
walks, a single and a hit by pitch allowed a Butler run to cross the plate
before an out had been recorded. After a fielder's choice groundout put an out
on the board, Butler's Callie Dennison blooped a ball behind second base.
Omahen made a diving grab for the out, but Krista Hakola tagged up and scored
just in front of the throw to tie the score and send the teams to extra
innings.
Green Bay loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom
of the eighth, but a strikeout and a lineout double play ended the threat.
Neither team scored in the ninth, setting the stage for an exciting 10th
inning.
In the top of the inning, Butler's Lauren McNulty
drilled her second solo home run of the game with one out to break the tie, and
the Bulldogs added what proved to be an important insurance run. In the bottom
of the frame, Omahen's fourth hit preceded a hit by Peerenboom. After a Rivera
was hit by a pitch with two outs, freshman Miranda Spangberg (Wausau, Wis.) worked bases-loaded walk to cut the deficit to
9-8. However, Miranda Reinke's
(Milwaukee, Wis.) hard-hit fielder's choice to third ended the threat.
Goecks (5-6) took the loss, starting the contest and
coming on in relief in the eighth inning. Nannemann worked seven innings and
allowed three runs on 10 hits while striking out four.
The two teams will conclude the three-game series on
Sunday with a contest at 12 p.m.
