GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) -
For the past two weeks, former Green Bay women's
basketball standout Julie Wojta (Francis Creek, Wis.) has been living the
dream, playing WNBA basketball. On April 16 Wojta became the first player in
the history of the Green Bay women's basketball program to be drafted by a WNBA
team after being a second-round, 18th overall selection, by the Minnesota Lynx.
"I've been
enjoying this experience every day, the team has been really nice, fun to be
around in helping through things and make me not feel like such a rookie,"
Wojta said with a chuckle.
The
defending champion Minnesota Lynx wrapped up preseason play with an 82-61 win
over the Chicago Sky May 15, after edging the Connecticut Sun 87-85 in its
first preseason battle May 10. Throughout preseason play, Wojta finished with a
combined nine points, going 4-for-7 from the field, including one three
pointer. In addition, Wojta grabbed a combined 10 rebounds in just over 27
minutes of play.
Regardless
of statistics, Wojta has learned a lot throughout her experience with the Lynx and
is looking forward to continuing her playing career at the professional level.
"Just to
have the opportunity to play and learn from others in this league and what the
'next level' is about is what I'll take away from this experience," said Wojta.
In the Lynx
final preseason game against the Chicago Sky, nearly 70 Green Bay Phoenix fans
and former teammates traveled to Minnesota to cheer on Wojta. Following the
contest, fans were treated to a Q&A and autograph session with Wojta.
"It was
awesome to see the support from Green Bay in the next step of my career and
hear the cheers when I came into the game and to spend time with them
afterwards was really special, I really appreciate it," Wojta said.
Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve may or may not have a
spot on her team's roster for Julie right now, but either way the pride of
Green Bay is certain to have a future in the WNBA and the work ethic to go
along with it.
"I thought Julie really handled herself well in camp
from the get-go," said Reeve. "The endearing thing about Julie, as all of Green
Bay knows, is that she plays so hard and she'll do anything that you ask of her
and we saw that in her play."
Reeve will need to have her roster cut down to 11
players by Thursday, May 10.
