GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Green Bay women's soccer head coach Trevor Warren
has announced the addition of two more players to his 2012 roster, as Karina Fredette (Gatineau, Quebec) and Elise Olson (Madison, Wis.) are set
to join the Phoenix this fall. Fredette and Olson join the list of 10 players who signed in February.
Karina Fredette
Position: Forward • Hometown: Gatineau, Quebec • High School:
Shattuck-St. Mary's • Club Team: Shattuck-St. Mary's
A
5-foot-8 forward, Fredette played high school and club soccer with future
Phoenix teammates Nastacia Behle, Sandra Graybill and Justy Linton at Shattuck-St. Mary's High School in Minnesota. Their U-18 team won
the Spring 2012 Midwest Regional League with a 9-0-0 record and participated in
the State Cup Championship. Shattuck-St. Mary's also won the Challenger Sports
Invitational Tournament in Kansas in 2011.
Fredette
has also had success as a member of the Ottawa Fury Soccer Club from 2007-10,
finishing eighth out of 120 teams in the U-15 division at the Gothia Cup in
Sweden. Her U-14 Fury team won the US National Cup in Lagrangeville, New York
and participated in the US National Cup Finals in Virginia Beach, Va., in 2008.
Individually,
Fredette received awards from the city of Gatineau, Quebec in Canada in 2010
and 2012 for being a National Athlete in soccer. In 2009 Fredette finished as
the top scorer for the U-15 Ottawa Fury team in the Super Youth League and was
invited to play with the U-17 Fury team in the SYL finals in Tampa, Fla.
Speaking
French as her first language, Fredette has excelled academically in several
areas, including French, English, arts and history. Her intended major is
design arts.
Warren on Fredette: "Karina
is the fourth player in 2012 to join our program from the prestigious
Shattuck-St. Mary's Soccer Academy. She is a quick, technical forward and is
composed in front of the goal. She also has a great ability to make the killer
final pass to set up her teammates. She is a fantastic addition to our forward
line and brings the experience of having played in the Midwest Regional League
level for several years."
Elise Olson
Position: Defense • Hometown: Madison, Wis. • High School: Madison La
Follette • Club Team: Madison Yahara Soccer Club • Previous School: Illinois
State
A
5-foot-2 defender, Olson transferred to Green Bay during winter break after
playing her freshman season at Illinois State in the fall of 2011. She will be
eligible to play as a sophomore in the fall of 2012.
Olson
was an all-conference and all-city performer in each of her four years at La
Follette High School, helping her team to four straight regional finals. A three-time
first-team all-conference selection, she was her team's captain and MVP as a
senior.
Olson
has also been a standout in the classroom, making the Dean's List in her first
semester at Illinois State and finishing high school with a 3.89 grade-point
average. Her intended major is human biology.
Warren on Olson: "Elise
is a natural left-footed defender who slotted in comfortably in the left
fullback spot and saw a lot of action in the spring games. She got the assist
on our goal against her old Illinois State team. A quick and aggressive
defender, Elise is a great addition to the team."
Fredette
and Olson round out Green Bay's 12-member recruiting class, making it the
largest group of newcomers since Warren arrived in 2008.
GREEN BAY WRAPS UP SPRING SEASON
The
Phoenix played three spring games in the month of April, posting a 1-1-1
record. Green Bay began with a 1-0 win at Michigan Tech on April 7, then
dropped a 1-0 result at Northern Illinois on April 15, and finally drew 1-1 at
Illinois State on April 29.
"The
spring season was very productive for us," Warren said. "It gave us the
opportunity to play some of the players who didn't see much action last season.
We had some very excellent performances and certainly have a lot to build on
for the fall."
Freshman
Hannah Kernen (Belleville, Wis.) knocked in the game's lone goal in the
comfortable 1-0 win at Michigan Tech. Kernen found the net early in the first
half and the Phoenix defense remained organized throughout, allowing very few
scoring opportunities for the Huskies.
The
Phoenix won the possession battle in the second game at Northern Illinois, but
was unable to break through and was handed the 1-0 loss. NIU tallied the
contest's only goal when a cross drifted into the far top corner.
In
the final match against the defending Missouri Valley Conference champions and
NCAA qualifiers from Illinois State, the Phoenix went down a goal early but
rebounded to earn the 1-1 tie. The Redbirds looked like the better team in the
first half, taking a 1-0 lead on a breakaway score. As the game progressed,
however, the Phoenix regained control thanks to strong midfield play from Hannah Kernen, Chanel Aries (Calgary, Alberta) and Emily Friedl
(Kenosha, Wis.).
The
equalizer came when Elise Olson (Madison, Wis.) - an Illinois State
transfer - launched a cross that split the Redbird defenders and found Ellen Joppe (Green Bay, Wis.) at the far post. Joppe timed her run perfectly,
controlled the ball with one touch and slotted it past the goalkeeper for her first
goal in a Phoenix uniform.

Bay's fall schedule will be released in the coming weeks. Check
