GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Before beginning her professional
career overseas, former Green Bay women's basketball standout Julie Wojta
(Francis Creek, Wis.) picked up one final award earned during her collegiate
career as she was awarded the Cecil N. Coleman Medal of Honor by the Horizon
League. Wojta is the sixth student-athlete in Green Bay Athletics' history to
earn the Coleman Medal of Honor and fourth women's basketball player.
Wojta became
the first player in the history of Green Bay women's basketball to be drafted
by the WNBA. Wojta was the 18th overall pick by the Minnesota Lynx in the
second round of the 2012 WNBA Draft held April 16. The Horizon League Player of
the Year also became the first player in Phoenix history to be named an AP
Second Team All-American since joining Division I, a John Wooden All-American,
Naismith Finalist and Wade watch Finalist.
While posting
a Division I program-best 35 double doubles throughout her career, Wojta is
third on Green Bay's Division I scoring list with 1,638 points and second with
843 career rebounds. Wojta also set a program record grabbing 12 steals Jan. 7
at Milwaukee before picking 10 steals in Green Bay's NCAA Tournament second
round game against Kentucky. Wojta and classmates Hannah Quilling (Eau Claire,
Wis.) and Katie Bushman (Phillips, Wis.) make up the winningest class in
program history, tallying 122 victories.
In the
classroom, Wojta maintained a 4.0 grade-point-average throughout her senior
campaign and was a Capital One Second Team Academic All-America selection and
CoSIDA Academic All-District 6 selection. Graduating with honors, Wojta was a
Chancellor's Leadership Medallion recipient and Horizon League winter and fall
Academic All-League selection.
The Horizon
League's highest individual honor, the Coleman Award is presented annually to
the League's top male and female student-athletes who best exemplify the
dignity and high purpose of the League and its membership. The individuals
demonstrate outstanding achievement in academics, athletics and extracurricular
activities. Candidates must be seniors who have exhausted their eligibility and
were participants on the varsity level in a League-sponsored sport. In
addition, nominees must have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.00
on a 4.00 scale, or its equivalent.
