GREEN BAY, Wis.
(GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay
women's soccer team will host nine contests at Aldo Santaga Stadium and compete
in two tournaments this fall, highlighting the 2012 schedule released on
Wednesday by head coach Trevor Warren.
The Phoenix schedule will get underway at home when
the team welcomes South Dakota State to Santaga Stadium on Friday, Aug. 17 at 7
p.m.
The two non-conference tournaments follow the opener,
with Green Bay first heading to Fort Myers, Fla., on Aug. 24-26 for the Florida
Gulf Coast Tournament, where the team will play two defending conference
champions. The Phoenix will play the host Eagles, the Atlantic Sun Conference
Champions, on Friday at 7 p.m. before facing Florida International on Sunday at 9 a.m. FIU claimed the Sun Belt Conference title in 2011.
"Both games will be a stiff test for our young team on
the road but they will certainly be a barometer of where we are as a team and make
us stronger down the road," said Warren.
On the following weekend, Green Bay plays two
non-conference games at the SIU Edwardsville Tournament. The Phoenix will face
Northern Iowa at 5 p.m. on Aug. 31 before taking on UM-Kansas City on Sept. 2
at 12 p.m.
A season-long three-game homestand follows as the Phoenix
hosts Michigan Tech (Sept. 7), South Dakota (Sept. 9) and Wisconsin (Sept. 14).
When Green Bay welcomes Wisconsin from the Big Ten Conference, the team will
look to avenge a close 1-0 loss in last year's clash with the in-state rival.
The last three games in the series with Wisconsin have
resulted in close 1-0 losses for the Phoenix, and the Badgers will be visiting
Green Bay for the first time since 2005.
"It's always fun to play the Badgers with having so
many Wisconsin players on our roster," said Warren. "It is certainly a game
that our team will look forward to."
A trip to Illinois State (Sept. 19) precedes the
Horizon League opener when Green Bay hosts Detroit on Sept. 22 at 12 p.m. The
Titans finished in second place in the conference a season ago.
The Phoenix will then travel to Wright State (Sept.
28) before concluding non-conference play at home against Indiana State on
Sept. 30 at 12 p.m. The contest against the Sycamores will also serve as alumni
weekend for the program.
The entire slate in October is filled with Horizon
League games, with the Phoenix starting the month on the road at Cleveland
State (Oct. 3). Green Bay hosts Youngstown State on Oct. 6 before taking 13
days off and welcoming defending Horizon League champion Milwaukee on Friday,
Oct. 19 at 7 p.m.
The 2012 regular season concludes with a trip to
Loyola followed by senior day on Saturday, Oct. 27 when Valparaiso comes to Santaga
Stadium at 1 p.m.
