GREEN BAY, Wis.
(GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The 2012-13
edition of Green Bay Phoenix Athletics kicked off Saturday afternoon at Aldo
Santaga Stadium, and the women's soccer team got things off to a winning start
with a 2-1 victory over Drake in exhibition play. Green Bay will officially
open its season on Friday, hosting South Dakota State at 7 p.m.
Green Bay and Drake decided to play three 30-minute
periods on Saturday, with one goal being scored in each. Less than two minutes
into the contest, the Phoenix dented the scoreboard. After a foul was whistled
on the Bulldogs, Green Bay sophomore Chandra Eigenberger (Green Bay, Wis.) connected on a penalty kick for a 1-0 lead.
Drake scored the equalizer in the 19th minute of the
second period when Paige Dusek received a pass from Generve Charles and found
the back of the net.
In the 16th minute of the third 30-minute session,
freshman Heidi Hartmann (Plymouth,
Minn.) found herself on the end of a beautiful left-footed cross from sophomore
Emily Friedl (Kenosha, Wis.) and
headed the ball past Drake keeper Kalena Litch.
Both teams fired six shots in the contest, with
Eichenberger firing three and Hartmann a pair to lead the Phoenix. All three
Green Bay goalkeepers saw 30 minutes of action, with sophomore Katy Pilarzyk (Madison, Wis.) and
freshman Nastacia Behle (St. Paul,
Minn.) posting scoreless periods.
Green Bay's Friday game will be the squad's lone
home game in August. After hosting South Dakota State, the Phoenix will hit the
road for tournaments at Florida Gulf Coast (Aug. 24-26) and SIU Edwardsville (Aug.
31-Sept. 2).
