DAYTON, Ohio
(GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Despite being
pinned on its own end of the field for the majority of the first half, the
Green Bay women's soccer team (3-6-1) played strong defensively and counterattacked
a tough Wright State (6-2-4) defense at the right moments en route to posting a
1-1 tie.
"I'm very proud of the team and how hard they competed
until the final whistle," said Head Coach Trevor Warren. " Wright State isn't
an easy place for any team to come and get even a point, so I'm satisfied with
the result."
Junior Ahna
Logan (Roseville, Minn.) broke through the Raiders defense and netted her
first goal of the season in the 65th minute off a pass from senior Megan
Braatz (Waukesha, Wis.) to break the scoreless tie.
"Ahna sprinted forward from her defensive position and
hit a perfect shot from outside the area in the bottom corner," said Warren.
Green Bay continued to push the ball to the Wright
State end of the field, but the Raiders defense prevented the Phoenix from
finding a second goal.
With less than five minutes remaining in regulation,
Wright State's Ashley Miltko went far post from 18 yards out off a corner kick
to knot the game at 1-1. Neither team could find the back of the net before the
final horn, sending the game to overtime.
Sophomore goalkeeper Katy
Pilarzyk (Madison, Wis.), who had eight saves on the night, made her most
critical stop with five minutes remaining in the first overtime period as
Wright State's Ini Umotong fired a shot from point-blank range.
The
tie brings Green Bay's Horizon League record to 0-1-1, while Wright State holds
a 1-0-1 conference mark.
Green
Bay will host Indiana State in a nonconference matchup at Aldo Santaga Stadium
on Sunday. The Phoenix will kickoff against the Sycamores at noon.
