KENOSHA, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - One week after an impressive start to her
collegiate career, Green Bay native and Phoenix freshman Sarah Mauel (Green Bay, Wis.) was even better in meet two,
finishing in third place to help the Green Bay women's cross country team to a
third-place finish at the Midwest Collegiate Open at the Wayne E. Dannehl
National Cross Country Course in Kenosha.
Mauel finished the hilly 5K
course in 18:24.7, behind only winner Angela Musk from Bellarmine and Jessica
Watychowicz of host UW-Parkside. As a team, Green Bay placed four runners
inside the top-20 to finish in third place out of 17 teams with 78 points
behind winner Northern Michigan (47 points) and just one point behind
UW-Parkside.
Senior Areanna Lakowske (Sparta, Wis.)
finished in eighth place with a time of 19:14.1 while sophomore Nicole Will (Luxemburg, Wis.) and
freshman Jennifer Jones (Appleton,
Wis.) placed in the top-20 in 17th and 20th, respectively. Will finished in a
time of 19:34.8 while Jones was right behind her in 19:41.2. Junior Kristi Petasek (New Franken, Wis.) rounded
out the five scorers for the Phoenix in 32nd place.
On the men's side, Green
Bay was led by sophomore Andrew Sorenson
(Onalaska, Wis.), who finished the 8K race in 54th place (28:05.3). Junior Alex Kimble (Green Bay, Wis.) was just
seconds behind in 60th place (28:09.8).
Rounding out the Phoenix
men's top-five scorers were Stephen Wagner
(Seymour, Wis.), William Lobner
(Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.) and Evan Wachter (Plymouth, Wis.), who finished in 81st, 87th, 96th, respectively.
As a team, the Phoenix
finished in 11th place in the race, which was won by the host UW-Parkside.
Green Bay will next be in
action next Saturday at the Falcon Invite in Mequon, Wis. at 11 a.m.
