Phoenix Swimming & Diving Teams Sweep South Dakota State

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Competing in their first home meet of the season, the Green Bay men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept South Dakota State on Saturday afternoon at the Peter F. Dorschel Natatorium.

The women improved to 4-0 with a 178-122 triumph, recording first-place finishes in 12 of 16 events. The men earned their first dual victory of the season (1-2) by a score of 162-138, picking up 11 top finishes.

Willem Poelmans (Hasselt, Belgium) finished the day with three individual wins for the Phoenix men, taking the top spot in the 200 free (1:43.54), 500 free (4:43.82) and 400 IM (4:05.91), finishing the 400 IM nearly 11 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor, teammate Andy Cooper (Peoria, Ill.). He then went on to help the 800 free relay to a first-place finish in 6:59.82. He was joined on the relay by Connor Andrew (Centennial, Colo.), Robert Miner (Madison, Wis.) and Brian Heiser (McFarland, Wis.).

Senior Parker Wolf (Kohler, Wis.), the reigning Horizon League Women's Swimmer of the Week, continued her hot start to the season, winning the 50 free (24.20) and 100 free (53.47) while also helping two relays to victory. Wolf swam the anchor leg of the 200 medley relay, partnering with Emily Gomez (Burlington, Wis.), Marlee Kiander (Tomahawk, Wis.) and Haley Lucas (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) to touch the wall in a time of 1:48.16. Closing out the meet, she swam the third leg in the 800 free relay as she and Claire Walters (Northfield, Minn.), Racheal Weiland (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.) and Natalie Neuwirth (Stevens Point, Wis.) took the top spot in 7:49.79.

Several relay competitors also took home individual event wins at the meet, as Lucas and Neuwirth finished with two wins apiece.

Lucas won the 200 fly in a pool-record time of 2:04.91 before capturing the top spot in the 100 fly in 57.59. The 200 fly time was nearly two seconds faster than former Phoenix standout Shannon Demrow's previous record of 2:06.86, set in 2011. Neuwirth won the 200 back (2:07.32) and the 400 IM (4:42.14).

Weiland was also victorious in the 200 free (1:54.50), while Gomez won the 100 back (59.09).

On the boards, the Phoenix took the top two spots in the 1-meter dive, led by a 238.42 point performance from Crystal Franzwa (Winona, Minn.) and followed by a 223.87 point showing by Jessie Dinelli (Northbrook, Ill.).

The 200 medley relay of Evan Hill (Jefferson, Wis.), Ryan Korslin (Rudolph, Wis.), Cole Hackney (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and Casey Murphy (Sun Prairie, Wis.) set the tone for the men's team, winning the first event of the day for the men in 1:34.34.

Korslin followed up the relay win with two individual wins in the 100 breast (57.76) and 200 breast (2:10.78).

The final individual wins for the men included Miner in the 200 fly (1:55.88) and 100 fly (51.86), Heiser in the 200 back (1:55.60) and Tanner Nordlund (Rice, Minn.) in the 1-meter dive (269.70).

Green Bay returns to action next weekend, hosting the two-day Phoenix 1-2-3, featuring Division II St. Cloud State and Division III UW-Whitewater.
