Phoenix Women Defeat Northern Michigan, Remain Unbeaten

By: Ryan Hartwig (@GBHartwig)

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay women's swimming and diving team picked up a 136-99 victory over Northern Michigan on Saturday afternoon at the Peter F. Dorschel Natatorium. Head coach Jim Merner's squad had a winner in 10 of the meet's 13 events, as the Phoenix improved to a perfect 9-0 in duals and 18-0 against all competition in 2013-14.

Green Bay jumped out to an early lead against the tough Division II squad by securing a win in the opening 400-yard medley relay. The quartet of Emily Gomez (Burlington, Wis.), Danielle Marcusen (Green Bay, Wis.), Haley Lucas (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) and Natalie Neuwirth (Stevens Point, Wis.) finished in 3:57.27, narrowly out-touching NMU (3:57.73).

The Phoenix finished the meet with a much more convincing relay win, as Neuwirth, Claire Walters (Northfield, Minn.), Samantha Rottel (New Berlin, Wis.) and Parker Wolf (Kohler, Wis.) won by more than seven seconds in the 400 free relay (3:33.41).

Green Bay also had a strong day on the boards, as the Phoenix swept the 1-meter and 3-meter events while turning in a number of standout performances. Freshman Crystal Franzwa (Winona, Minn.) took home the win in the 1-meter competition with an impressive score of 268.57 – good enough for an NCAA Zone cut. Senior Carrie Dinelli (Northbrook, Ill.) turned in one of her top performances of the year on the 3-meter board, racking up 274.95 points in a win.

Six different Phoenix swimmers earned individual victories in the pool on Saturday. Sisters Emily Gomez and Anna Gomez both collected wins, as Emily won the 200 backstroke (2:08.91) after her relay triumph, and Anna pulled away for the win in the 1000 free (10:38.90).

Lucas, Neuwirth, Walters and Wolf were also individual winners, as Lucas won the 200 butterfly (2:10.10), Neuwirth won the 200 IM (2:10.41), Walters took the 200 free (1:54.80) and Wolf claimed the 50 free (24.28) in addition to their relay victories.

The Phoenix women return to action next Saturday, Feb. 1, when they head down I-43 for an in-state battle with Horizon League rival Milwaukee.
