GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – A game-winning header in overtime by Detroit led to a 3-2 defeat for the Green Bay women's soccer team on Saturday afternoon at Santaga Stadium. The Phoenix falls to 8-5-2 and 2-3-0 in conference while the Titans improve to 7-5-1 and 4-1-0 in Horizon League play.
Detroit ended a tight and evenly played contest throughout after 6:21 into the first overtime, receiving a headed goal by Alyssa Riley from a cross into the box, the team's leading scorer. The loss is the second straight for the Phoenix, following a stretch where the team won four of five.
A penalty kick goal by Karina Fredette (Gatineau, Quebec) in the 77th minute tied the match at 2-2, which was the sophomore's third goal of the year. The two teams entered the half tied at 1-1, before the Titans scored in the 51st minute to go up 2-1.
Chandra Eigenberger (Green Bay, Wis.) gave the Phoenix its only lead of the match in the 21st minute after scoring her second goal of the year. Eigenberger received a lead-out pass from forward Heidi Hartmann (Plymouth, Minn.), who played a beautiful ball through.
The Phoenix dominated the match in the stat book, outshooting Detroit 15-5 in shots on goal and 22-9 overall. Green Bay also generated numerous scoring opportunities after tying the match in the second half.
Green Bay will play its final road match of the season next Wednesday (Oct. 22) at UIC before returning home for its final two matches of the season.
