GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Following a 4-1 defeat to Horizon League champion Valparaiso, the Green Bay women's soccer team will have to await the results of other conference matchups to determine its seeding in this year's tournament. Green Bay now stands at 10-6-1 overall and 4-4-0 in league play while first-place Valparaiso improves to 12-1-4 overall and 8-0-0 in conference.
The Crusaders made a statement early, scoring three goals in the first six minutes. The visitors scored just 32 seconds into the match, making it 1-0 before adding another 1:46 into the match to go up 2-0. Valparaiso would make the lead insurmountable with its third goal in the seventh minute.
Green Bay scored its lone goal of the match in the 60th minute, when Alex Zeller found the back of the net off a rebounded shot from Chandra Eigenberger. Zeller hammered it past the Valpo goalkeeper, as Eigenberger was credited with the assist on the goal.
The weather certainly played an impact in the game, as wind gusts reached as high as 28 mph throughout the match. The weather should have been credited with an assist on Valpo's fourth goal, as the ball sailed into the back of the net off a corner kick, hanging in the wind and over the head of Nastacia Behle.
The Phoenix did outshoot the Crusaders on goal by a final tally of 9-5.
Green Bay will now await its postseason placement in the tournament. At the time of this release, the Phoenix was the No. 4 seed, which would mean it would host. The team will need UIC to win or draw versus Youngstown State in order to remain at home in the first round of the tournament.
Either way, Green Bay will be making its first appearance in the postseason since 2009.
