GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – After being honored before the game, a pair of seniors played a key role in the Green Bay men's soccer team's 2-1 victory over Valparaiso on Saturday night at Santaga Stadium. The Phoenix earned its first conference victory of the season in the process and improved to 5-9-3 and 1-5-1 in conference play, while Valparaiso moves to 8-5-4 overall and 3-3-1 in the Horizon League.
With 37 seconds remaining in the game and Green Bay trailing 1-0, senior Lawrence Talery (Coon Rapids, Minn.) flicked one into the back of the net with his head to force overtime. Fellow-senior Defrim Ramushevski (South Milwaukee, Wis.) played the ball in the air to Talery, picking up the assist on the goal.
The drama continued into the overtime period, with the Phoenix striking again to claim the victory with only six seconds remaining in the first OT. Tyler Swanner (Glen Carbon, Ill.) made a move at the top of the box to bury it home and send the Phoenix into a celebratory scrum. It was the senior Talery leaving his mark again, playing the ball to Swanner and notching the assist.
The Crusaders scored the first goal of the game in the 86th minute, leaving Green Bay with little time to respond. Even though it has not been the case this conference season, the Phoenix responded in a huge way with a game-tying goal in the 90th minute.
Green Bay put six shots on goal while Valpo finished with five. The Phoenix also held the Crusaders to just one corner kick while it took four as a team.
The seniors went out in style at home, winning in dramatic fashion and spoiling Valparaiso's Horizon League Tournament seeding. Green Bay was playing for only pride, but showed team resiliency in the overtime win.
Green Bay will conclude the 2014 season next Friday (Nov. 7) when it travels to face Cleveland State at 6 p.m.
