Green Bay Women's Golf Opens Spring with Events at Butler

By: Andrew Gavin (@GBGavin)

AVON, Ind. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Playing in cold, wintry conditions in Indiana, the Green Bay women's golf team opened its spring season on Saturday and Monday with two events at Prestwick Country Club. On Sunday, the Phoenix competed against Butler in a dual meet before participating in the weather-shortened Butler Invitational on Monday.

On Saturday, Green Bay fell to Butler by 12 strokes in a dual meet, with the Phoenix shooting a 327. Sophomore Sammi Grunder (Pardeeville, Wis.) carried over her strong play from the fall season by carding a 77 to finish in second place.

Butler was again just 12 strokes in front of Green Bay on Monday for round one of the Butler Invitational. The Phoenix shot a 325 to finish in seventh place among the tightly contested field. The second round was cancelled due to snow and cold weather.

Freshman Avery Steen (Luck, Wis.) fired the best round of her young career on Monday, posting a 3-over par 74 to finish in a tie for first place. Steen lost a tiebreaker for medalist honors to Lindsay Lammers of Detroit.

Green Bay will return to action on April 7-8, competing in the IPFW Invitational in Fort Wayne, Ind.
