Women's Soccer Scores Six Goals in Shutout Win Over UND

By: Joey Daniels (@GBJoeyD

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – An offensive showcase was on display Sunday afternoon at Santaga Stadium, as the Green Bay women's soccer team cruised to a 6-0 victory over North Dakota in nonconference action. The Phoenix improved its record to 3-1-0 on the year, while UND slips to 1-2-0.

“I am proud of the team character shown today and their ability to put a full weekend together. It was a tremendous all around team effort. We wanted to continue building confidence but also clean up a few areas defensively that have let us down previously. I am happy with their response and mentality,” head coach Kacey Burke said.

Green Bay scored early and often, with the first score coming in the 17th minute of the first half off the foot of Brianna Messner (Seymour, Wis.). The sophomore found the ball in perfect position after Sydney Born (Edina, Minn.) had her header attempt saved, leading to the ball that fell right to the foot of Messner.

Heidi Hartmann (Plymouth, Minn.) scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season at 21:05 of the first half, when she maneuvered through the UND defense to score yet another goal in 2014. Senior Hannah Kernen (Belleville, Wis.) was credited with the assist on the goal, feeding it to Hartmann in perfect position.

It wasn't long thereafter before freshman Alex Zeller (Dundee, Ill.) scored her first collegiate goal in the 29th minute of the first half. The goal was setup via the corner kick from Abby Juzwik (Madison, Wis.), who played it into Katie Schulz (Plymouth, Minn.) leading her to line a perfect pass to the head of Zeller who buried it.

Juzwik would score her first goal of the season in the 70th minute of the second half, smashing one into the upper-90 of the goal. The senior sent it in from about 25 yards out, placing it perfectly into the back of the net.

Rhiana Stelter (Waukesha, Wis.) and Karina Fredette (Gatineau, Quebec) would score the fourth and sixth goals of the game, with Fredette's coming off the corner kick sent directly into the back post. Stelter finished in the 41st minute on a nice cross-in ball from freshman Megan Diamond (Winnipeg, Manitoba).

The Phoenix dominated in all phases of the game, outshooting North Dakota 27-4 in total, including 13-2 in shots on goal. Green Bay also logged 13 corner kicks to UND's one.

Green Bay returns to the pitch this Friday, Sept. 5, when it travels to Chicago State for the first road game of the season. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
