GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay men's soccer team gained a late lead on Sunday night, before allowing Northern Illinois to score with 34 seconds remaining in regulation as the two teams ended in a 2-2 draw on the campus of NIU.
Tyler Swanner (Glen Carbon, Ill.) scored his second goal of the season and gave the Phoenix (3-2-1) a 2-1 lead with his free kick goal in the 72nd minute, but NIU would respond with a backbreaking goal in the 90th minute to force the game into overtime. Swanner buried a free kick from well outside the box, giving Green Bay its second lead of the game.
Before NIU tied the game in the 55th minute, Audi Jepson (Green Bay, Wis.) scored his team and league-leading eighth goal of the year to give Green Bay an early 1-0 lead in the 26th minute. Jepson has now scored in four of his team's six games this season, including scoring seven goals in his last three games overall.
The Huskies threatened on a few occasions in the pair of overtime periods, but Green Bay was able to keep the home team out of the net. Both goalkeepers finished with two saves in the contest.
NIU was handed a red card with a few minutes remaining in the second overtime, however Green Bay was unable to take advantage.
The Phoenix will now return home to host Western Michigan on Friday (Sept. 19) for a 3 p.m. kickoff time.
