GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Registering back-to-back road victories, the Green Bay women's soccer team defeated Western Illinois 2-1 on Sunday afternoon to improve its record to 6-2-2 on the season.
The win for the Phoenix runs its undefeated streak to four games, which also saw junior Heidi Hartmann (Plymouth, Minn.) net her team and league-leading 10th goal of the season. Hartmann was able to tie the game in the 15th minute, less than five minutes after Western Illinois went up 1-0.
Hartmann finished a beautiful header in front of goal after senior Elise Olson (Madison, Wis.) connected on a perfect pass into the box. Hartmann's 10 goals this season are the most by any player since 2006.
Karina Fredette (Gatineau, Quebec) would tally her first career game-winning goal in the 78th minute, after WIU gifted one to the Phoenix by mishandling a pass back to its own keeper. It's Fredette's second goal of the year, while the Green Bay defense was able to keep the Leathernecks out of goal the rest of the way.
The Phoenix put six shots on goal with WIU registering five. Green Bay held the edge on corner kicks 5-4.
After the game's two-goal performance, Green Bay has now outscored its opponents 23-8 in 2014.
Green Bay will hope to make it five-straight undefeated games when it opens up Horizon League play next Saturday (Sept. 27) at Oakland. Kickoff will be at 6 p.m. CT.
