MILWAUKEE, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay women's soccer team traveled south this afternoon for its matchup with Horizon League and in-state rival Milwaukee (6-3-2, 3-0-0). The Phoenix vied for its first back-to-back victories over the Panthers for the first time since the 1996 season, but Milwaukee proved to be too much for Green Bay (2-9-0, 0-3-0) and claimed the 3-1 decision at Engelmann Stadium.
Milwaukee struck first in the contest this evening, wasting no time getting on the board and sneaking one past the Green Bay keeper in the fourth minute after Sydney Senn jumped a pass and took advantage of the one-on-one opportunity, giving the Panthers a 1-0 lead.
The next goal to be scored would be from fellow Panther Anna Smalley in the eighth minute to increase Milwaukee's advantage to two goals.
After finding itself down 2-0 in the early happenings of the match, Green Bay made an attempt to erase the Panthers' advantage, as freshman Nicole Piette turned in a goal in the 29th minute to cut the lead in half. Piette one-timed a partially-saved free kick past the Milwaukee keeper to collect her first goal of the season and become the 10th Phoenix to find the back of the net on the season.
Milwaukee would go on to add another goal in the closing minutes of the match to collect a two-goal lead and all but diminish Green Bay's hopes of a comeback.
Green Bay finished the match with 11 shots on the night, placing seven of them on the mark to keep the Panthers' keeper busy. Junior Katie Schulz led the Phoenix attack at Engelmann Stadium and rattled off five shots with three of them being placed on goal.
The Green Bay women's squad will now turn its focus to the coming weekend when it returns home to face Cleveland State on Saturday at 1 p.m. for Alumni Day.
