YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay women's soccer team was in Youngstown, Ohio this afternoon, taking on Horizon League-foe Youngstown State for its fifth conference matchup of the season. The match started out slow for the Phoenix (3-10-0, 1-4-0) offense, as no shots on goal were recorded in the first half. However, a header in the 64th minute put Green Bay in front of the Penguins (5-9-0, 0-5-0) 1-0 and eventually led to Green Bay's first conference victory of the season.
Green Bay bided its time on the offensive side of the ball on Saturday afternoon at Farmers National Bank Field, waiting until the 64th minute of play to record its first shot on goal. The shot was taken by Heidi Hartmann after a deep pass into the box found its way to the senior, allowing her to play it off her head and into the Penguins net, collecting Green Bay a 1-0 advantage.
The Phoenix defense recorded its first league shutout in the afternoon's contest, thwarting every scoring attempt the Penguins made throughout the day. Kelly Kent aided in the preservation of the clean sheet by adding three saves. Youngstown State recorded 12 shots on the day, but a strong Green Bay backline only allowed three of the attempts to be recorded as on-goal attempts.
Green Bay was only able to accrue seven shots in the 90 minutes of play, but Hartmann managed to place two on goal and sneak one past the keeper to garner the offensive advantage. Youngstown State held a 6-3 edge over Green Bay in corners, but the Phoenix held strong and didn't allow the advantage to be a factor.
Kara Baugrud and Alex Zeller each picked up their first assist of the season on Hartmann's scoring strike after the two expedited the ball up the field to Hartmann, allowing her to find mesh and gather the Phoenix a 1-0 lead.
Hartmann's goal in the 64th minute was her team-leading sixth of the season, and brought her career total to 22, just one goal shy of a tie for fifth place with Tracey Roper (23) on Green Bay's all-time list.
Green Bay will have a week away from competitive action, as the team's next contest will take place on Saturday, Oct. 17 at Valparaiso, Ind., when the team continues league play with the defending Horizon League Champions, Valparaiso.
