GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Green Bay welcomed Oakland to Aldo Santaga this evening to continue its 2015 Horizon League slate. The Phoenix (2-6-3, 2-2-2) allowed a goal in the seventh minute of play to fall behind early and was unable to find the equalizer in the remainder of the match, falling 1-0 to the Golden Grizzlies (5-6-1, 2-2-1) under the lights of Aldo Santaga Stadium.
Oakland started on the offensive almost immediately after kickoff, netting its first goal in the seventh minute. The goal occurred after a free kick was awarded to the Golden Grizzlies, allowing Jacob VanderLaan to play the ball to the head of Austin Ricci inside the Phoenix box. Once the ball reached Ricci, he steered it left with his head to beat the keeper low for his sixth goal of the season.
Green Bay came out in the second half with a sense of urgency in search of the goal that would even the teams at one apiece, as the Phoenix almost doubled its shot count from the previous half, turning in 11 compared to six from the previous half.
Oakland was held to only a single shot in the second half and was unable to place its only attempt on-goal. Kyle Ihn played a quality match for the Phoenix despite the lone goal and finished with three saves.
Head coach Jeremy Bonomo's Phoenix outshot the visiting Golden Grizzles 17-10 despite trailing by three shots (9-6) in the opening half of play, with five Phoenix players logging shots in the contest.
Audi Jepson led the Phoenix attack with seven shots on the night and banged two off the crossbar, nearly knotting things up for Green Bay.
The loss was ended an unbeaten streak of five games for Green Bay and was the first time a visiting team has bested the Phoenix at Aldo Santaga Stadium in 2015.
The Phoenix will return to the field on Tuesday in Kalamazoo, Mich., when the team takes on Western Michigan at 3 p.m. for a non-conference matchup.
