GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay women's soccer team played host to UIC this evening, welcoming the Flames for a 6 p.m. kickoff under the lights of Aldo Santaga Stadium. The Flames (5-10-2, 2-4-1) netted the only goal of the contest in the 37th minute of play to claim its second league victory of the season.
Green Bay (3-12-0, 1-6-0) moved the ball well in the first half, turning in 10 shots in the 45-minute period compared to the Flames' seven. The Phoenix turned in six-straight shots from the 10th minute to the 19th minute with aspirations of jumping out to an early lead. Of the six attempts, Green Bay placed three of them on-goal, but UIC's keeper managed to make the stops to keep the game knotted at zero.
In the 36th minute of play, Green Bay was awarded a penalty kick after a hand ball in the box and elected Katie Schulz to take it. Schulz went right on the attempt, but the keeper made the necessary move to knock the ball away and stave off the Phoenix yet again.
Minutes later, UIC turned in the first and only goal of the contest after Jasmin Carrera centered the ball to Naomi Rush, allowing her to steer the ball left and find the net for her third goal of the season.
Green Bay didn't slow its attack in the second half of play and turned in 11 more shots, placing another five on the mark and forcing UIC's Kelly Fritz to make the stops.
The Phoenix placed a total of 10 shots on-goal in the 90 minutes of play. Senior Heidi Hartmann only played 57 minutes in the match but tallied six shots, three of which were on-goal. Fellow senior Devan Schultz logged four shots and placed all of them on-goal.
Green Bay's next match will be on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. when it takes the field against Wright State for Senior Day.
