GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Senior Cheenuj Shong scored the lone goal of the contest in the 53rd minute of play against the visiting Eastern Illinois Panthers, solidifying victory for the Phoenix in its final non-conference match of the season.
Green Bay (5-8-3, 2-3-2) only placed one shot on goal in the first 45 minutes of play but seemed to dominate the ball in terms of possession, as the Phoenix recorded five shots in the half compared to Eastern Illinois' (3-11-0) two. Green Bay also logged three corner kicks before the break in play and held the Panthers to no attempts.
The second half of play saw increases in offensive output from both teams, but the Panthers were again outmatched by the Phoenix. This time, a goal from the foot of Shong, who had the ball played to him on a corner kick from Audi Jepson, granted the Phoenix the offensive edge it had been searching for.
Green Bay outshot Eastern Illinois 13-5 in the second half of play, bringing the totals for both teams to 18 and seven, respectively.
The Green Bay defense limited the number of on-goal attempts from the Panthers to three, all of which found their way into the sure hands of Phoenix keeper Kyle Ihn.
Green Bay was attacking from all angles in the contest and had eight players record shots in the match. Jepson led the effort and tallied four attempts of his own and placed one on goal, with teammates Shong and Henry Hilling each adding three shots and placing two on the mark.
Green Bay picked up its sixth clean sheet of the 2015 season and Ihn collected his fifth in the win. The Phoenix also improved to 3-1-2 within the friendly confines of Aldo Santaga Stadium.
Green Bay will now return to its league slate, starting with Cleveland State at home this Saturday at 7 p.m. for Green Bay's Senior Night.
