Darner Lands Two Standouts for First Official Recruiting Class

By: Joey Daniels (@GBPhoenixMBB)

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) –Standout high school seniors Trevor Anderson (Stevens Point, Wis.) and Kameron Hankerson (Novi, Mich.) signed their National Letters of Intent on Wednesday to play their collegiate basketball for the Green Bay men's basketball program, giving Linc Darner his official signees as head coach of the Phoenix. Anderson and Hankerson will both join the Phoenix in 2016-17.

“We wanted to identify individuals who will represent our program the right way, with that coming both on the court, in the classroom and around the community. Both Trevor and Kameron come from outstanding families and we look forward to them being role models for us and representing Green Bay basketball with class. We feel we have found the right characteristics combined with the talented basketball skill set in these two young men,” said Darner

“We're very excited with our two new additions for the program next year. We identified an area where we needed to improve and we feel we have accomplished that with this class. Both Trev and Kam can score and pass the ball at a high level and they will make us a better team early on,” Darner said.

Anderson is a 6-foot-2 combo guard getting set to play his senior season at SPASH in Stevens Point, Wis., where he is already the all-time leading scorer in school history. Playing for his father Scott Anderson in high school, (Trevor) Anderson is coming off a junior season where he averaged 23 points per game and five assists per game. He led the Panthers to the WIAA Division I State Championship and was named both WBCA and AP First-Team All-State last season, leading him to the No. 2 individual player ranking in the state.

“I'm very excited about signing my letter of intent to play basketball at Green Bay. What Coach Darner is already doing is heading in the right direction for Green Bay basketball and it's going to be an honor to play for that program,” Anderson said.

Green Bay was the final choice for Anderson over a plethora of other schools, including some inside Wisconsin. Anderson becomes the first high school senior from the state of Wisconsin to sign with Green Bay since current juniors Turner Botz and Kenneth Lowe did so in November 2012 out of Little Chute.

“I'm going to come in hungry and ready to work, while working towards being the best person, teammate and leader that I can be. I will give my best and I hope that gives Green Bay fans what they have been patiently waiting for, and that's to get this program back into the NCAA Tournament,” Anderson said.

The 6-foot-5 athletic Hankerson, who can play both guard and forward positions, is the 16th overall prospect in the state of Michigan and the No. 2 shooting guard. From Novi, Mich., located on the outskirts of Detroit, Hankerson prides himself on versatility, something which could allow him to excel in Darner's system. Hankerson has been a rising star in the recruiting ranks in the state of Michigan.

“I feel like the way they push the ball and how they share the ball, fits the way I have been taught to play. The minute I stepped foot on campus I could tell this was where I saw a bright future,” Hankerson said.

The versatile Hankerson is the first recruit from the Detroit area in over a decade.

QUOTES

Trevor Anderson: The staff offered me the first time they watched me play, which says a lot about how much they believe in me. I thought to myself, why be the 10th recruit at a bigger school when I can be the number one recruit at an in-state school. Coach Darner and Coach Herbst have made Green Bay feel like home to me, when we talk it's like we're catching up, and that they weren't trying to sell me something. It's the family atmosphere I was looking for.

Darner: Trevor was a major priority from day one. One of the first things I did when I got to campus was go and watch him play. Coach Herbst watched him at the WIAA State Tournament and I went to watch him work out; it didn't take long for us to realize, we really wanted him to be a part of program. We made a concerted effort to have one our coaches at every one of his AAU games and we did just that, with sometimes having three or four coaches in attendance. He was an individual we could build our program around and he comes from a great basketball family with his dad and grandfather being highly successful coaches.

To come in right away and land a player of his caliber was a huge get for us. We're excited to have an in-state quality individual like Trevor becoming part of the Green Bay Basketball family. He'll bring a leadership quality to our program, along with a strong will to win. His success at both the high school and AAU levels speak for themselves.

Scott Anderson (Father and Coach): Our entire family, and especially Trev, are extremely excited and grateful for the wonderful opportunity he has starting next year with the Phoenix. Trev really likes Coach Darner and his staff, the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay campus and the city of Green Bay (where he was born). He has worked extremely hard for this and to see his dream come true at Green Bay is very gratifying as a coach, but even more so as his dad.  We are very proud of Trev and are thankful we will be able to follow his college career so closely at Green Bay.

Kameron Hankerson
Height:
 6-5
Weight: 180
Position: Guard
Hometown: Novi, Michigan
High School: Novi High School
AAU Team: Power Stroke

Accomplishments

· Averaged 9 points, 4 assists, 5 rebounds, 2 blocks and shot 53 percent from three-point range last year

· Helped lead Novi to a second-place finish in the Kensington Conference

· Named All-Conference as a junior

Kam Hankerson: “The process was exciting and difficult together. He (Darner) trusted me enough as a player and individual to offer me a scholarship right off the bat. Once I made my decision it was a huge relief and I am looking forward to the opportunity to play at Green Bay.”

Darner: We're very excited Kameron has decided to join our program. He's going to be a very versatile player for us, as he brings in great size at the guard position. He's going to continue to improve his skill set as a player and we look forward to watching him grow.

His upside has him just scratching the surface of the type of player he can be. We expect big things from his high school team this year and he will be a huge part of their success. Kam will only get better and we are excited for his potential and future.

Randall Herbst: I knew once we watched him play in Milwaukee that he was someone we needed to have on our radar. Kam will bring in great size and great length and a level of versatility.
