GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Green Bay head coach Sean Burdette announced that a pair of in-state recruits will help comprise the program's 2016 recruiting class on Thursday, after Maddie Yoss (Brookfield, Wis.) and Hanna Hoesley (Arcadia, Wis.) signed their National Letters of Intent committing to play for the Phoenix volleyball team beginning next season.
“Several things stand out about this class,” Burdette said. “We have added a highly competitive and driven setter in Maddie, and more than anything she is a proven winner leading her high school to two consecutive state championships her junior and senior year. In Hanna, we have added a physical player and presence in the front court for years to come. She is a player that not many other programs knew about due to the smaller club she was with and the tournaments she played in, but I think she will be able to impact what other teams do offensively, and also allow us some options in how we use her in our offensive systems.”
After adding a total of seven incoming players to the 2015 roster, including three in-state products, Green Bay will prepare to bring in two more players that have experienced a lot of success within the state of Wisconsin, both at their respective schools and individually.
Yoss will immediately bring a championship pedigree to the Green Bay program, after just recently helping Divine Savior Holy Angels (46-5) repeat as Division I champions following its 3-2 win over Oconomowoc on Nov. 7. The 5-9 setter recorded 1,444 assists (10.7 per set) this past season for the Dashers, which was nearly 350 assists more than any DI high-school player in the state and finished as the seventh-highest total in the nation.
“Maddie possesses the skill set and leadership needed to win a Horizon League Championship,” said Burdette. “She has been all-in as a Phoenix throughout the recruiting process and wants to play with the best players. She played at a very high level in both club and high school and is a player that we targeted from the first time we saw her play.”
Green Bay adds tremendous size and athleticism to its front-court with Hoesley, a 6-4 attacker who was a two-sport athlete at Arcadia High School, both on the volleyball and basketball courts. She became the first player in Raiders program history to eclipse the 1,000 kill plateau as a junior in 2014, helping her team clinch a fourth-consecutive Coulee Conference Championship.
“Hanna is a versatile attacker that can come in and compete in any of the three front-row positions for us,” said Burdette. “She has a good arm that can terminate in both first and second tempo sets and can be a shutdown blocker at the net. I am excited to get Hanna in the gym and work with her next season to see what position she fits the best. She has a very high ceiling for her skill set and can become a big-point scorer in the Horizon League.”
The duo will become the first Green Bay volleyball players listed on the all-time roster to hail from either Brookfield or Arcadia, Wis.

Yoss on Green Bay: "The process was stressful and sometimes even discouraging, but very exciting at the same time. After deciding Green Bay was where I wanted to go I had a huge weight off my shoulders. It's been fun getting to focus on my game now that I know where my future is. I love the quaint community and the volleyball program offer. After I visited the campus the first time, the girls on the team and the coaches really sold the experience for me and I loved every minute of being up there."
Hoesley on Green Bay: “The whole recruiting process was exciting for me. I chose Green Bay because I can see myself playing while pursuing my education there. I liked the atmosphere at the school and decided it was the fit for me.”
