MOREHEAD, Ky. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Claiming its seventh win in its last nine games, the Green Bay men's basketball team broke away from Morehead State on Monday night, winning 78-72 at Johnson Arena in its final game of the 2015 calendar year. The Phoenix has now gone 3-0 on the road against teams from the Ohio Valley Conference this season.
Jamar Hurdle enjoyed his best game in a Phoenix uniform, finishing with a team-high 19 points and seven rebounds. Hurdle led the charge for the Green Bay (7-5) bench, which recorded 35 of Green Bay's 78 points. In a career-high 23 minutes of action, Hurdle shot 8-for-9 from the field including a perfect 3-for-3 from the free throw line.
The game was back-and-forth for the majority of the first half, before the two teams entered the locker room tied at 36-36. All 10 players scored for the Phoenix in just 20 minutes of play, marking the 12th time this year that at least nine players have scored for Green Bay.
Two other players finished in double figures for Green Bay, which will now return home for the beginning of Horizon League play, led by the team's leading scorer Carrington Love who tallied 18 points. It's the 10th time in 12 games that Love has recorded double figures, while his backcourt-mate Charles Cooper finished with 14 points and seven rebounds. Cooper scored 10 of his 14 points in the second half alone and grabbed all seven of his rebounds in that half as well.
The lead changed 10 times and was tied seven times before the Phoenix claimed the lead for good with 13:16 to play thanks to a finish by Hurdle. Morehead State would cut the lead to three points with 6:18 to play, but they would never get it back to a one possession game the rest of the way.
Khalil Small, Turner Botz and Anthony Brown recorded six points each, with Small adding four assists.
It's the first loss for the Eagles (6-5) at home this season and the third road win for the Phoenix. Green Bay recorded 46 of its points in the paint and made only two three-pointers, tying its lowest mark this season (vs. Akron).
Green Bay will take its recent winning ways into conference play this Saturday, when it opens the league slate at home against new-league member Northern Kentucky. Tip-off at the Resch Center is set for 1 p.m. as head coach Linc Darner will go for his 300th career win.
