GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay softball team (12-18) continued conference play this afternoon, welcoming Wright State for a doubleheader at Phoenix Field. The first game would end in favor of Green Bay, as the Phoenix would best the Raiders 7-4. However, the second game would go in Wright State's win column, with Green Bay falling 15-2 to conclude the weekend.
Green Bay 7, Wright State 4
The Phoenix wasted no time getting the bats going in game one, as Green Bay jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Senior shortstop Hailey Mohrfeld was able to get things started with a leadoff double, later advancing to third off of a throwing error to give Green Bay a baserunner in scoring position with no outs. With Mohrfeld on third and no outs in the inning, Hailee Frey stepped up to the plate and hit a rocket up the middle to score Mohrfeld and pick up the RBI.
The Phoenix kept the offensive success going in the second inning, scoring two runs from a Mohrfeld single that brought in Alyssa Johnson and a passed ball that scored Kelli Hutchinson after Hutchinson singled through the middle earlier in the inning.
Wright State would add one run in the third inning to bring the Raiders within two, but Green Bay would immediately match the run in the fourth after Miranda Spangberg led the inning off with a double and Johnson sent one through the left side to bring Spangberg home.
Green Bay would score three runs in the fifth and sixth innings combined, with Katelyn Huemmer knocking one out of the park for a two-run shot in the fifth, and Lauren Danner turning in a pinch-hit triple in the sixth to score Johnson and increase the Phoenix lead to six runs heading into the final inning of play.
Wright State would make an attempt to rally in the final inning, scoring three runs and forcing Heather Sanderson to exit with one out remaining in the contest. Hailey McDermott would come in to relieve Sanderson and close things out for Green Bay, garnering her first save of the season.
Sanderson spent 6.2 innings in the circle for Green Bay, giving up 11 hits, allowing four runs and striking out five batters in the start.
Johnson finished the game 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Huemmer finished 1-for-3 on the day with a pair of RBIs.
Wright State 15, Green Bay 2
Wright State jumped out to an early lead in game two, putting one run on the board in the second and another in the fourth to lead the Phoenix 2-0.
Green Bay responded to the deficit quickly, matching Wright State's two runs after Allie Taylor hit a sacrifice fly into center field to score Frey from third, and Spangberg followed with an RBI single into right field to score Abby Brinkmeier.
From this point on it was all Wright State, as the Raiders would go on to score 13 more runs after a four-run sixth and a nine-run seventh.
Green Bay returns to action this Tuesday as the Phoenix travels to Madison, Wis., for a doubleheader against in-state rival Wisconsin. The first game gets underway at 3 p.m., with the second game following at 5 p.m.
