A Tale of Two Games for Green Bay Softball

By: Stephen Wagner

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay softball team (9-13) welcomed UW-Parkside (5-21) to Phoenix field this afternoon, dropping the first game 10-2 and picking up the win in the second game 12-4.

UW-Parkside 10, Green Bay 2 (Five Innings)

The Rangers' Manders started off the game with a double to left field, giving Parkside a runner in scoring position with no outs in the inning. Briana Cavin would go on to strike out consecutive batters after allowing the double, placing the Rangers in an inauspicious situation in the early goings. Parkside's Ellingson managed to reach on an error after knocking one into right field, scoring Manders in the process to lead things 1-0 heading into the bottom of the inning.

Green Bay would not take long to respond as Hailey Mohrfeld would step up to the plate and get things going with a lead-off home run, knotting things up at one apiece. Miranda Spangberg would be up next for Green Bay and would not disappoint, sending a line drive into left-center for a double. Abby Brinkmeier would take the next at-bat for Green Bay, turning in a single to left-center to score Spangberg from second a give Green Bay a 2-1 lead.

The lead would not last long for the Phoenix, as Parkside would go on to score five runs in the second inning to lead things 6-2.

A one-run third inning and three-run fourth inning would bring Parkside's tally to 10 runs, with the Phoenix being held scoreless for the remainder of the game and falling to the Rangers 10-2 in five innings of play.

Green Bay 12, UW-Parkside 4 (Five Innings)

After dropping the first game against the rangers, the Phoenix came out swinging in the second game of the doubleheader and put together a nine-run second inning to lead the rangers by seven after two. The nine-run inning was highlighted by a Mohrfeld grand slam that scored Allie Taylor, Katelyn Huemmer and Alexis Otto. Following Mohrfeld's home run, Spangberg stepped up to the plate and sent a double into left-center to give the Phoenix a runner in scoring position with Brinkmeier due up. Brinkmeier took advantage of her opportunity at the plate and sent one sailing over the center field fence to bring the run total to six on the inning. Jaclyn Delagrange and Alyssa Johnson also picked up RBI singles in the inning.

Green Bay allowed two runs in the top of the third inning, but immediately answered with two runs of its own in the bottom of the inning after Spangberg homered to left and Brinkmeier hit a triple down the line before scoring on a wild pitch.

Katelyn Huemmer added a home run in the fourth inning to extend Green Bay's lead to eight runs. Hailey McDermott sealed the eight-run rule victory after three consecutive outs in the top of the fifth.

Heather Sanderson improved to 4-3 on the season and picked up the win for Green Bay, allowing eight hits, four runs and fanning three batters in 3.2 innings in the circle.

Mohrfeld picked up four RBIs in the game while going 1-for-3 at the plate. Mirand Spangberg and Brinkmeier each garnered two hits in three at-bats.

Green Bay returns to action this Friday against Cleveland State for a Horizon League doubleheader with games at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
