Green Bay Golf Teams Set for Horizon League Championships

By: Andrew Gavin (@GBGavin)

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay men's and women's golf teams are set to begin the 2015 Horizon League Championships on Friday at Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. The 54-hole tournament begins Friday and will include 18 holes per day before concluding on Sunday.

The women's golf team enters the Horizon League Championships after a strong showing in a match play event last week in Noblesville, Ind. Head coach Kelsey Frey guided the Phoenix to a second-place finish in the four-team event, which also included league opponent Valparaiso.

Green Bay's lineup for the tournament will include juniors Sammi Grunder (Pardeeville, Wis.), Steph Laude (Slinger, Wis.) and Lexi Wilson (Marinette, Wis.), sophomore Avery Steen (Luck, Wis.) and freshman Emily Grunder (Pardeeville, Wis.).

At last season's league championship, Steen led the Phoenix with a 14th-place finish, including a 2-over par 75 in the second round. Laude and Sammi Grunder were also in the lineup as Green Bay finished in seventh place. The women's tournament will be played on a 5,975-yard, par-73 course.

Live scoring will be accessible throughout the tournament on GolfStat.com.

On the men's side, head coach Lee Reinke brings his squad to Florida on the heels of low scores at the Big Blue Invitational in Tennessee. Reinke's lineup will include three seniors – Tom Boockmeier (Green Bay, Wis.), Joseph Collard (Marinette, Wis.) and Tyler Schmidt (Jefferson, Wis.) – as well as junior Gene Kiela (Plymouth, Wis.) and sophomore Joe Du Chateau (Fond du Lac, Wis.).

Boockmeier enters the event after tying the school record with a 7-under 65 in the final round of the Big Blue Invitational which helped him earn Horizon League Golfer of the Week honors. Boockmeier's scoring average of 75.1 ranks second on the team behind Kiela (75.0).

At the 2014 Horizon League Championships, Boockmeier was second on the team in a tie for 17th place while Collard, Du Chateau and Kiela also competed as Green Bay finished in sixth place.

Live scoring for the men's tournament will be available here.
