AMES, Iowa (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay softball team (16-24) traveled to Ames, Iowa for a doubleheader with Iowa State (25-23) this afternoon. The Phoenix got off to early starts in both contests of the twinbill, but was unable to sustain any long-term offense against the stifling cyclones pitching, falling 11-3 in both games.
Iowa State 11, Green Bay 3 (Six Innings)
Hailey Mohrfeld entered the contests one hit shy of the single-season hit record of 56. Mohrfeld wasted no time getting things going in game one, leading things off with a home run to left field to give Green Bay a 1-0 lead and tie the record.
The 1-0 lead did not last long, as the Cyclones went on the plate six runs in the bottom of the first with four of the runs coming from a McFarland grand slam to right-center.
The Phoenix and the Cyclones were both scoreless in the second and third inning, with the next offensive strike coming from Green Bay in the fourth inning. The Phoenix managed to plate the two runs off of a two-RBI, record-breaking Mohrfeld single into left field that brought the Phoenix within three runs.
The rest of the game would be all Cylones, as Iowa State brought home 4 runs in the fifth inning and one run in the sixth to enforce the eight-run rule and ensure an 11-3 victory.
Heather Sanderson received the nod in game one, spent 4.2 innings in the circle, allowed 12 hits, nine runs and fanned two batters.
Mohreld went 2-for-3 in the contest with three RBIs and extended her hit streak to nine games.

Game two saw the Phoenix offense get rolling early once again. Mohrfeld led things off with a hit to the shortstop that she legged out for a single. Later in the inning, Mohrfeld would touch home off of a double down the left field line turned in by Allie Taylor.
Iowa State would match the one run posted by the Phoenix in the top of the first in the bottom of the inning, bringing the total to one-all.
The Cylones broke the game open in the second inning, plating six runs off seven hits, two of which were two-RBI home runs courtesy Iowa State's Hildreth and Cappaert.
The Phoenix added two runs in the fourth inning after an RBI double from Jaclyn Delagrange that brought in Hailee Frey from third, and a throw attempt to get Kelli Hutchinson out a second that brought home Delagrange.
The Cylones had an immediate answer for the Phoenix offense in the bottom of the fourth, bringing home three runs off of a two-RBI single from Spendlove and an RBI single through the middle from Antillion.
Iowa State went on to plate one run in the sixth to match the score from game one and defeat the Phoenix 11-3.
Alexis LeCalsey started the game for Green Bay and spent 1.1 innings in the circle, allowed four hits, four runs and struck out one batter. Briana Cavin came on in relief of LeCalsey and put in 2.1 innings of work, allowed nine hits and gave up four runs.
Mohrfeld continued to see the ball well in game two and went 3-for-3 at the plate and extened her hit streak to 10 games.
Green Bay returns to action this weekend when the Phoenix welcomes leage-foe Detroit to Phoenix field for a three-game series with the titans starting on Friday at 3 p.m.
