GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay softball team (17-26, 9-1 HL) finished up the 2015 regular season against Detroit (10-40, 6-14 HL) this afternoon. The Phoenix hosted the Titans in a doubleheader at Phoenix field. Game one ended in a 7-3 decicsion in favor of the Titans, while game two finished with a 14-2 Phoenix win to conclude the regular season for both teams.
Detroit 7, Green Bay 3
Detroit broke the game open in the first inning of play, plating three runs off of a pair of home runs from Astroga and Ferstle.
The Phoenix was unable to get anything going in terms of run production until to bottom of the second, Jaclyn Delagrange turned in a double to left field that brought in Alyssa Johnson.
Both teams would see scoreless innings in the third and fourth, with the next runs from both teams being scored in the fifth. In the top of the inning, Detroit added one run to its tally after a Kostich home run with no one on base. The bottom of the inning saw the Phoenix score two runs from a Johnson home run that also brought in Delagrange.
After five innings, the Phoenix trailed by one. The sixth inning would allow the Titans to add some insurance runs to the board and lead the Phoenix 7-3 heading into the final inning.
Green Bay was unable to deplete the four-run deficit and fell to Detroit 7-3 in the final inning.
Hailey McDermott received the start for Green Bay, but Briana Cavin saw mos of the action. Cavin was in the circle for 6.1 innings, allowed four runs and fanned four batters.
Mohrfeld and Allie taylor both finished 2-for-4 at the plate, while Johnson finished 1-for-2 with a home run and two RBIs.
Green Bay 14, Detroit 2
The Phoenix wasted no time getting things going in game two, plating four runs in the bottom of the first in response to Detroit's one in the top of the inning. The four Phoenix runs were scored off of a two-RBI double from Delagrange, an RBI double from Miranda Spangberg and an RBI single from Johnson.
Detroit added another run in the top of the second to cut Green Bay's advantage in half, but Green Bay once again answered immediately. In the bottom of the second, the Phoenix added another pair of runs from a Katelyn Huemmer home run that scored Mohrfeld as well.
The Green Bay defense would hold the Titan offense scoreless the remainder of the game, but that did not mean the Phoenix offense would slow down. Green Bay added four runs in the third inning off of a pair of two-RBI doubles turned in by Hutchinson and Mohrfeld.
Leading by eight runs at the end of the third, Green Bay decided to increase its advantage by four runs in the bottom of the fourth, starting with an RBI single from Kelli Hutchinson that scored Allie Taylor. The next three Phoenix runs came from a Mohrfeld single that allowed Allie Hislope, Hutchinson and Spangberg to touch home plate.
Heather Sanderson received the win for Green Bay after putting in 4.0 innings of work, allowing six hits, two runs (one earned) and striking out three batters.
Mohrfeld was a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate with four RBIs, while Spangberg and Johnson were each 2-for-2 with an RBI of their own.
The Phoenix will await the results from today's league games to determine the location of the Horizon League tournament starting next Wednesday.
