ROCHESTER, Mich. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) –The Green Bay softball team (18-28) competed in its third game of the Horizon League Tournament this afternoon, competing against the Wright State Raiders (22-32) in game seven of the tournament. Green Bay jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning of play, but Wright State used a two-run third and three-run fourth inning to gain the upper hand and defeat Green Bay 5-3 to advance in the tournament.

Green Bay wasted no time getting the offense going in the contest, plating three runs in the first inning. Senior Hailey Mohrfeld (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) led the inning off with a double to left-center field. Sophomore Katelyn Huemmer (Sun Prairie, Wis.) appeared at the plate for the Phoenix two at-bats later and tagged a single to right-center that allowed Mohrfeld to come around from second. Fellow senior Miranda Spangberg (Wausau, Wis.)followed Hummer's at-bat with a double down the left field line that scored Hailee Frey (Marshall, Wis.). The next plate appearance went to Jaclyn Delagrange (New Haven, Ind.). Delagrange hit a ball to the shortstop and was able to reach on a throwing error, bringing home Huemmer on the error and giving Green Bay a 3-0 advantage.
Heather Sanderson (Rapid River, Mich.) and the Phoenix defense were able to hold the Raiders scoreless in the first two innings, but Wright State was able to get its offense going in the third inning by scoring two runs. The first Raiders' run was scored when Hanna Floyd singled up the middle to bring home Honnah Susor. Floyd was able to score later in the inning when Becka Peterson turned in an RBI double, cutting the Phoenix lead to one run.
Wright State would keep the offense going in the fourth inning, scoring three runs off of five hits to lead things 5-3 with three innings to play.
The Phoenix was unable to score a run in the final three innings of play, falling to Wright State 5-3 to end its tournament hopes.
Sanderson spent 3.2 innings in the circle for the Phoenix, allowed seven hits, four runs and picked up one strikeout. Briana Cavin (Elk Grove Village, Wis.) also put some work on the hill for the Phoenix, spending 2.1 innings in the circle, allowing only one hit and picking up two fans.
Mohrfeld finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate with a double, while Spangberg finished 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Mohrfeld ends the tournament with 72 hits on the season, a new single-season program record for Green Bay.
