GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Head coach Jeremy Bonomo picked up his first career coaching victory as the leader of the Green Bay men's soccer program this afternoon, working towards a 1-0 decision against Drake in the Phoenix home opener at Aldo Santaga Stadium.
“Any win is a good, especially when it's in division one,” Bonomo said. “The guys worked hard today, and after losing a tight one in Northern Illinois they could've gone the other way, but they didn't, they came out and took care of business.”
Green Bay (1-1-0) wasted no time getting on the board against Drake (1-1-0), its second match in a three-day period, with junior Audi Jepson (Green Bay, Wis.) netting one in the second minute of play via a penalty kick after being taken down in the box by Drake's keeper.
“It's tough to play two matches in three days, so it was nice to see guys dig deep to hold on and pull out the victory in the final minutes,” Bonomo said.
Jepson almost added two more goals to the Phoenix tally on the day, sending one just over the goal in the 38th minute after working his way through Drake's backline, and scorching one of the crossbar in the 50th minute after having the ball played to him in front of the net.
The Bulldogs held the advantage in shots taken this afternoon 15-9, five of which came from Drake's forward Nic Jaimes, with eight of them being on goal compared to Green bay's four. The stellar play from Green Bay's goalkeeper, Kyle Ihn (Wales, Wis.), helped Green Bay secure a clean slate in the 1-0 victory with Ihn adding eight saves in the match.
Green Bay was able to attack from multiple angles this afternoon, as six players on the Phoenix roster recorded shots in the match.
Green Bay will now turn its attention to next Sunday when the team welcomes Western Illinois to Aldo Santaga Stadium for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
