GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay women's soccer team played host to Oakland Saturday night, its first home Horizon League contest of the 2015 slate. The Golden Grizzlies (2-5-4, 1-1-0) turned in an early goal and added another in the second half to defeat the Phoenix 2-0 at Aldo Santaga Stadium.
Jamie Horne scored early for the Golden Grizzlies, turning in her second goal of the season in the seventh minute of play to collect Oakland the early lead. Nessa Ogbonna increased Oakland's advantage in the 58th minute by scoring her first-career goal off a Claudia Krupicz assist and propelled the Golden Grizzlies to their first win in the young Horizon League season.
Green Bay (2-8-0, 0-2-0) was limited to five shots in the contest, placing three of them on the mark and forcing Oakland's freshman keeper Emily Zweng to make the saves in order to secure her first career victory. Oakland controlled the pace of play for a good majority of the match, firing off 21 shots on the night and placing nine of them on goal.
Green Bay made attempts to rally and lower the deficit but saw every scoring opportunity turned away by Oakland's backline as time dwindled down.
Although Green Bay was only able to tally five shots in the contest, the five attempts came from the feet of four different Phoenix players.
The Phoenix will now turn its full attention to league and in-state rival Milwaukee, as the team heads south on Wednesday for a matchup in Milwaukee, Wis., at Engelmann Stadium.
