CHICAGO, Ill. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Senior guard Carrington Love recorded his 1,000th career point in the first half and the Green Bay men's basketball team cruised to a convincing 99-66 road victory on Tuesday night at the Jones Convocation Center.
Love, who scored a team-high 20 points in the contest, becomes the 27th player in program history to record 1,000 career points at Green Bay. He's the most recent player to hit the 1,000-plateau since Keifer Sykes did so in Dec. 2013. Love also finished with five steals, which ties his career-high.
Four players in all scored in double figures for the Phoenix, while all 12 players on the active roster scored at least one point. Joining Love in double figures was Charles Cooper (18 points), Khalil Small (14 points) and Tevin Findlay (11 points).
It's just the second time all season that Green Bay has watched all 12 players score, while it finished one point shy of the century mark for just the second this season as well. The Phoenix scored 108 points against UW-Superior back on Dec. 20 when all 12 players scored, and the 99 points scored against the Cougars (4-16) is the second-most this year.
With the game tied at 11-11, Love would knock down a three-pointer to give Green Bay a lead would never give back. The Phoenix would go on to lead by as many as 40 points in the game in the second half, and led for a total of 33:56 of the 40 minutes.
Green Bay forced Chicago State into 22 turnovers, the eighth time this year it's forced its opponent into 20-plus giveaways. The Phoenix turned 16 of those turnovers into steals, with seven players notching at least one steal, and recorded 27 points off turnovers. The Phoenix also held the Cougars to 29.6% (21-71) from the field, a season best in field-goal percentage defense.
For the third time this season, Green Bay knocked down double-digit three-pointers (10-for-26). Seven different players made at least one three-pointer, led by Love's four makes from downtown.
With the nonconference portion of the schedule officially in the books, the Phoenix will return to the Resch Center to host Oakland (Jan. 23) on Saturday and Detroit next Monday (Jan. 25). Saturday's contest at 1 p.m. will serve as Prevea's “Black Out” Game, with the first 1,000 youths in attendance to receive a free black jersey. Fans are also encouraged to wear black, with “black out” cancer serving as the theme.
