Green Bay Rallies to Defeat Quinnipiac, 5-3

ROSEMONT, Ill. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay softball team concluded play at the Total Control Invitational on Sunday morning, taking the diamond against Quinnipiac (1-3) for the Phoenix's fifth game in three days. Green Bay (4-6) scored five unanswered runs in the fifth through seventh innings to rally past the Bobcats, 5-3, and pick up its fourth victory of the season.

Green Bay 5, Quinnipiac 3

It took some time for Green Bay to gets its offense going at 9 a.m. in its final matchup in the Total Control Invitational, spotting Quinnipiac three runs in the first two innings.

After empty fourth and fifth frames by both teams, Green Bay's rally would begin in the fifth inning. Senior Kelli Hutchinson stepped into the batter's box first and got things started with a single up the middle. Junior Allie Taylor was able to bring Hutchinson home later in the inning after hitting one to the shortstop who had no play at home on Hutchinson.

The Phoenix was able to tie the game, 3-3, in the sixth inning when Hailee Frey singled through the right side, a hit that plated Katie Rossmann and Alanna Beyer.

With both teams tied heading into the seventh inning, Green Bay would take its swings at the plate first. Alyssa Johnson came through in crunch time for Green Bay, as the senior sent a ball into left field that allowed Acacia Tupa and Taylor to touch home with two outs in the inning.

Green Bay did not surrender the lead in the bottom of the seventh, completing the comeback and defeating Quinnipiac 5-3.

Freshman Bailey Smaney (3-2) spent all seven innings in the circle for Green Bay, allowing 10 hits, three runs and collecting three strikeouts. Tupa went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Phoenix in hits. Hutchinson and Taylor both had mult-hit days, both going 2-for-4 with Taylor collecting an RBI.

Green Bay will take a couple weeks away from competitive action before traveling to Knoxville, Tenn., for the Tennessee Invitational on March 4th.
