Softball Drops Pair in Saturday Doubleheader at Wright State

By Patrick Stumpf

DAYTON, Ohio (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay softball team (9-22, 0-3 HL) concluded its first Horizon League series of the regular season on Saturday, falling twice in an afternoon twin bill to Wright State (15-13, 3-0 HL) at WSU Softball Field. The Phoenix dropped a 14-6 (F/6) decision in Game One, and despite a furious late-inning rally, fell once again in Game Two, 5-3.

Green Bay will travel to Kenosha next Thursday for a doubleheader (2 p.m./4 p.m.) against UW-Parkside.

After the Phoenix was held scoreless in the top of the first, both teams combined to score in six consecutive frames, which included four home runs, three by Green Bay batters.

Freshman third baseman Jenna Smarzinski (2-for-3) hit her first two collegiate home runs in back-to-back plate appearances, while center fielder Katelyn Huemmer (1-for-2) also added her first home run of the 2016 campaign.

Wright State pounded out 19 hits; however, 10 of which came from the top three hitters in the Raiders' batting order. After Green Bay cut the WSU advantage to 8-6 in the fifth, Wright State scored six unanswered runs, capped off on a game-winning single by shortstop Becka Peterson. Peterson finished 4-for-5 with 7 RBIs in the game.

Left fielder Abby Brinkmeier went 4-for-4 with one run scored for the Phoenix.

Both teams traded tallies in the first and second innings, until Wright State broke the game open after plating three in bottom half of the third.

With two on and two out, Raiders' second baseman Libby Pfeffer reached on a RBI single back to Green Bay starter Bailey Smaney. Two pitches later, left fielder Ashton Salyers knocked in two more with a double down the left field line, giving WSU a 4-1 lead.

After the Raiders tacked on an insurance run in the 6th, Green Bay found itself down four, 5-1, entering the final inning. Acacia Tupa and Allie Taylor gave the Phoenix a fighting chance after back-to-back RBI singles made it 5-3; however, Wright State starter Ashley Sharp ended the Green Bay rally by striking out Huemmer on a 2-2 pitch.
