Green Bay Forces Dramatic Fifth Set Before Cleveland State Wins 3-2

GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Green Bay volleyball team was able to force a dramatic fifth set after trailing 2-0 at home on Friday night to defending champion Cleveland State, before the visiting Vikings won 15-12 in the final set to pick up the Horizon League road win at the Kress Center. The Phoenix (8-10, 4-3 HL) dropped its third-straight league match after starting 4-0, losing two of the three in five sets.

The fifth set was back and forth early on, before Cleveland State (12-7, 5-3 HL) responded to a Green Bay run to make the score 12-11 in favor of CSU. Leading by that margin, the Vikings won the next two points and eventually recorded the game-winning kill to win 15-12. CSU won an intense opening set 27-25, and cruised to a convincing 25-16 second set win, before the third set was forced to long as well.

Green Bay actually fell behind 9-3 early in the third set, heading towards a straight-set sweep at home. The Phoenix then rallied to force a 12-12 score, before the set was tied eight more times. Facing set point, trailing 25-24, Green Bay won the next three points to win 27-25 and return the favor from the first set won by CSU. Taylor Totka and Jessica Wolf each recorded a kill late in the set, and Taylor Wolf tallied the clutch kill trailing 24-23.

The fourth set was controlled by Green Bay after it only led by one at 10-9, going on to win 15 of the next 22 points in the set. Roberta Todd and Lydia DeWeese recorded the set-winning block, forcing a dramatic fifth set in front of the largest crowd at the Kress Center this season.

Taylor Wolf notched a career-high 21 kills and 22 points in the defeat, recording her fourth double-double of the season. DeWeese added 13 kills, having now recorded double-figure kill performances in all but five matches this year. Todd also added 13 kills, while Jessica Wolf totaled 11.

Setter Maddie Yoss racked up 55 assists in the five-set match, one shy of tying her season-high, and tallied her seventh double-double of the year and fourth-straight overall. Vanessa Buman finished with a team-high 21 digs, her sixth 20+ dig performance of the year. Austyn Everingham and Emily Lautenschlager combined for 14 digs defensively.

Green Bay will host Northern Kentucky for its annual Dig Pink Game tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m. back at the Kress Center. For more information on the Dig Pink event, click here
