Volleyball Gets Back to Winning Ways with 3-1 Dig Pink Victory Over NKU

GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Green Bay volleyball team got back on track on Saturday afternoon at the Kress Center, knocking off visiting Northern Kentucky 3-1 in its annual Dig Pink Game in Horizon League play. The Phoenix (9-10, 5-3 HL) returned to its winning ways after dropping three-straight, downing the Norse (8-9, 4-4 HL) in four sets to earn its fifth win in league.

Green Bay was on the ropes right away in the first set, when a back and forth affair found the Phoenix trailing 26-25 and against set point. Senior Taylor Totka came through with a clutch kill coupled with a pair of NKU errors gave handed Green Bay the 28-26 first set win. NKU responded with a  25-18 second set win, after the Norse used a 5-0 run to go up 13-8 and stay in control the rest of the set.

The Phoenix took control of the second set with a well-timed 4-0 run, after the two teams played to a 10-10 tie after 20 points. Junior Jessica Wolf registered back-to-back kills to give her squad the 25-19 third set win, grabbing control with a 2-1 advantage.

The fourth set was much of the same for the home team, taking a quick 6-2 lead and never looking back. The Phoenix led the rest of the set and eventually pulled away with the 25-16 win.

Lydia DeWeese hit .412, her second-highest hitting percentage in any game this season, and racked up 16 kills with eight blocks. The eight blocks rejected by DeWeese sets a new season-high for the senior, who totaled 20.5 points in the match.

Junior hitter Jessica Wolf took 41 swings and connected on 16 kills, also registering four blocks and three digs. J. Wolf has now tallied double-figure kills in three-straight HL games. Her younger sister, Taylor Wolf, finished with 11 kills and 14 digs, good enough for her fifth double-double of the season, all coming in Horizon League action.

The Green Bay attack was controlled by Maddie Yoss, who finished with 52 assists, her second-straight and fourth match this season with 50-plus assists. Additionally, Yoss dug out 13 attempts, extending her streak to five-straight double-doubles on the season. Vanessa Buman was all over the court for the defense, recording 18 digs. Austyn Everingham and Emily Lautenschlager were both also key to the defense, which held NKU to a .168 hitting percentage.

Green Bay will now hit the road for four-straight HL matches, starting next weekend with a trip to Youngstown State (Fri., 5 p.m. CT) and Oakland (Sat., 3 p.m. CT). The Phoenix beat both teams at home earlier this season.
