Women's Basketball Shines in Exhibition Opener Against UW-Whitewater

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- The Green Bay women's basketball team took the court for its first exhibition of the 2017-18 season on Thursday night at the Kress Center and displayed balance in the convincing 71-34 victory. The Phoenix had 11 players score in the matchup, with Madison Wolf leading the way with 12 points in 19 minutes. Green Bay's defense really shined in the second half as the squad only allowed nine points in 20 minutes, only two of which were given up in the fourth quarter.

Senior Jessica Lindstrom seemed to pick up right where she left off last season, scoring 11 points and grabbing seven rebounds in 18 minutes. Karly Murphy joined Wolf and Lindstrom in double digits with 10 points of her own. The redshirt freshman also pulled down seven boards in 17 minutes.

The Phoenix came out firing in the opening quarter as the squad constructed a 23-14 lead. Green Bay scored 16 points in the opening quarter and had eight points contributed from its bench.

The active hands of Laken James and Frankie Wurtz combined to swipe 10 steals, with Jen Wellnitz recording four of her own.

The Phoenix defense was relentless against the Warhawks all evening, forcing 28 turnovers, collecting 21 steals and swatting eight shots as a team. Green Bay was able to capitalize on the turnovers it forced and score 32 points on the extra possessions.

Green Bay controlled the paint all night against UW-Whitewater, outscoring the opposition 44-4 and not allowing a single point to be scored in the final three quarters of play. The Phoenix finished the night 25-54 (46.3%), while the Warhawks were held to 8-42 (19.0%).

Green Bay will take the floor on Thursday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. as the squad closes out exhibition play with Michigan Tech at the Kress Center.
