CHICAGO, Ill. – For the second-straight match, the Green Bay volleyball team came up just short in its bid for a five-set victory, this time falling 3-2 at UIC on Friday night in Horizon League play. The Phoenix (10-12, 6-5 HL) drops into a tie with the Flames (15-9, 6-5 HL) four fourth place in the league standings at 6-5, as UIC avenges its earlier defeat at the Kress Center this season in pulling even.
Green Bay faced match point at 13-14 in the fifth set, before
Lydia DeWeese came through with a big kill to tie it up at 14-14. The Flames then used back to back kills to escape with the five-set win, this after trailing 2-1 and being dominated in the second and third sets.
UIC opened with a 25-18 first set victory, before the Phoenix cruised to a 25-9 win in the second and a 25-17 win in the third. The Flames would not be denied on their home court in the fourth, winning 25-16 to force the dramatic fifth set they would eventually win. The Phoenix never led in the fifth set and never trailed by more than two points.
Freshman
Roberta Todd led Green Bay with 14 kills and two blocks, while both
Taylor Wolf and DeWeese finished with 13 kills.
Maddie Yoss registered another double-double, recording 44 assists and 14 digs.
