Volleyball Bounces Back with Straight-Set Victory at Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Picking up a much-needed win, and doing so in convincing fashion, the Green Bay volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 victory over in-state rival Milwaukee on Saturday evening at the Klotsche Center. The Phoenix (11-12, 7-5 HL) snapped its two-match losing streak, both by tight 3-2 margins, by crushing the Panthers (11-14, 5-7 HL) on their home court.

Green Bay has now beaten Milwaukee in six-straight matches overall, with five of those victories coming in straight sets.

The Phoenix and Panthers were tied at 21-21 late in the third set, with Green Bay needing four points to get back to its winning ways and improve to 7-5 in HL play. The visiting Phoenix did just that, taking four of the next five points to win the third set 25-22 and earn its fourth league win in straight sets this season.

The two teams were tied at 13-13 in the first set, before the Phoenix would go on a 12-5 run to close out the set and win 25-18. Four different Phoenix players recorded a kill during that stretch, with Roberta Todd killing two.

The second set would follow a similar story as the first, this time with Green Bay leading 18-17 late in the set. Five attacking errors, a service error and a Jessica Wolf kill pushed the Phoenix lead to 2-0 heading into the intermission with a 25-21 second set win.

Taylor Wolf led Green Bay with 12 kills, while Lydia DeWeese and Todd each added 10. DeWeese was a scorching 10-for-16 attacking and also added a pair of blocks.

Vanessa Buman and Austyn Everingham combined for 25 digs defensively, while Maddie Yoss added 8 digs and controlled the offense with 39 assists.

Green Bay will now return home to the Kress Center next weekend, playing host to league-leading IUPUI on Friday and Wright State on Saturday. Friday will serve as Parents Night, while Saturday's 4 p.m. serve will see seniors Taylor Totka, Lydia DeWeese and Abby Jeffcoat honored for Senior Night.
