GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay women's soccer team netted two first-half goals on Saturday afternoon at Aldo Santaga Stadium, but visiting Cleveland State had the final answer and scored in the 87th minute to win 3-2 on Senior Day. The two teams battled wet and windy conditions all afternoon, but still combined to score five goals, with the two goals being the most Green Bay has scored in league play this year.
Celebrating her Senior Day with three others, Alex Zeller scored twice for the Phoenix (2-9-1, 1-3-1 HL) in the first half and had her team tied 2-2 at the half with the Vikings (7-7-0, 3-2-0 HL). Maggie Fuller, KK Leskowicz and Leah Nitardy, along with Zeller, were each recognized prior to the game for their contributions to the program over the years.
CSU struck first in the 22nd minute before Green Bay responded with a goal in the 25th minute by Zeller to tie it. The Dundee, Ill., native added her second goal of the match in the 32nd minute to give her team the lead. CSU then answered in the 42nd minute to force the tie before scoring with under 3 minutes left on the clock to win.
The Phoenix will play three of its final four games on the road, starting with a trip to Northern Kentucky on Saturday, Oct. 14. Kickoff is set for 12 noon CT.
GOAL SUMMARY
22' | CSU | Ashley Thiss (Assist: Grace Grant): Grant played a nice ball through the defense to an open Thiss who needed one touch to blast it past Kent into the back of the net.
25' | GB | Alex Zeller (Assist: Carli Vogel): Vogel beat her defender near the sideline to play the ball up to Zeller near the corner of the box, before Zeller beat the keeper to the ball and scored.
32' | CSU | Alex Zeller (Assist: Carli Vogel, KK Leskowicz): Leskowicz showed great footwork to work free before finding Vogel in the center of the defense near the top of the box. Vogel then touched it to Zeller making a nice run, who then went over the keeper during her dive to score.
42' | CSU | Toni Dickson (Assist: Katie Bainbridge): Bainbridge took a free kick in front of the Green Bay bench from around 30 yards out and found a running head of Dickson who went off the head into the back of the net.
87' | CSU | Grace Grant (Assist: Ashley Thiss): Thiss did a fine job to find open space before playing a centering balll to Grant who was running free down the middle of the field. Grant took a touch before scoring to the left of Kelly Kent, who came out to prevent the goal.
