Green Bay Downs NKU in Season Finale, Will Face UIC in HL Tournament Quarterfinals

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. --- The Green Bay volleyball team concluded the regular season with a 3-1 win at Northern Kentucky on Saturday evening, finishing with a 9-7 record in HL play earning the No. 4 seed and setting up a date with No. 5 seed UIC in the Horizon League Tournament quarterfinals next Friday night. The Phoenix (13-14, 9-7 HL) took a 2-0 lead before losing the third set quickly, but promptly responded with a 25-20 win in the fourth set to secure the win over the host Norse (11-14, 7-9 HL).

Green Bay will enter the 2017 Horizon League Tournament as the No. 4 seed and will face No. 5 seed UIC on Friday night at 6 p.m. ET/5 p.m. CT in Cleveland, Ohio. The Vikings won the regular season championship following its 3-2 win over the Phoenix last night. In 2016, GB fell in five sets to Cleveland State in the Championship game, which was also played in Cleveland.

Taylor Wolf led the Phoenix once again, leading the team with 14 kills and 10 digs, stating her case for Horizon League Freshman of the Year. Jessica Wolf added 10 kills of her own and also totaled five blocks.

With the first set tied at 21-21, Vanessa Buman came through with back to back aces, taking a 23-21 lead. NKU responded to tie the set at 23 a piece, but a bad set and a T. Wolf kill gave the Phoenix a 25-23 tight first set win.

GB trailed in the second set late at 18-17, but would win seven of the next 10 points to pick up the 25-20 second set win. NKU aided in the run, finishing with several errors to go with a Lydia DeWeese and Taylor Totka kill.

NKU won the third set in convincing fashion, 25-13, but that would be the only set they would take off the visiting Phoenix.

The Phoenix will now prepare for the conference tournament, where it will look to win three matches in three days and earn a trip to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2003.
