Volleyball Advances to Semifinals with Thrilling 5-Set Win Over UIC in Cleveland

CLEVELAND, Ohio (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- The 4th-seeded Green Bay volleyball team has advanced to the Horizon League Tournament semifinals with a thrilling 5-set win over 5th-seeded UIC on Friday at Woodling Gymnasium on the campus of tournament-host Cleveland State.

Horizon League Freshman of the Year Taylor Wolf led the way for the Phoenix, tallying her third 20-kill match on the season, swinging at a .349 clip. Senior Lydia DeWeese and Junior Jessica Wolf each added double-digit kill totals, collecting 12 and 14 kills respectively.

Green Bay found itself trailing two sets to none heading into the intermission, but was able to set the tone for the remainder of the match by jumping out to a 7-1 lead in the 3rd set. UIC would rally to take the lead at 12-11, but a 6-0 run behind solid serving from sophomore Emily Lautenschlager would give the Phoenix a 20-16 lead, which they wouldn't relinquish, winning the set 25-18.

The fourth set started similarly, with the Phoenix jumping out to a 7-0 lead behind three service aces from senior Taylor Totka. Following two UIC points, sophomore Maddie Yoss would pick up two service aces while extending the Phoenix lead to 14-2. The Phoenix would close out the set siding out on the remaining 8 UIC points to win the set 25-10.

After giving up the first two points of the fifth set to UIC, DeWeese would pick up a kill and three total blocks as the Phoenix took a 6-2 lead. DeWeese finished the match with 7 total blocks for the Phoenix, which tallied 11 as a team. UIC would battle back to tie the match at 12-12, but a kill and a block from J. Wolf gave the Phoenix the commanding lead. A kill from DeWeese would close out the match for the Phoenix and punch its ticket into the next round.

The No. 4-seeded Phoenix (14-14) move on to face the No. 2-seeded Golden Grizzlies of Oakland in the semifinal matchup Saturday at 5 p.m. CT. The two teams split their meetings during the regular season, each winning at home.
