CLEVELAND, Ohio (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- The Green Bay volleyball team has advanced to its second-straight Horizon League Tournament championship game with a straight-set win over No. 2-seeded Oakland on Saturday at Woodling Gymnasium on the campus of Cleveland State.Â
The Phoenix picked up where it left off on Friday night, jumping out to a 10-5 lead over the Golden Grizzlies in set one. Green Bay wouldn't trail in the set, taking it 25-15 behind a staunch defense that held Oakland to -.036% hitting in the set. Freshman Taylor Wolf collected four kills in the set to pace the Phoenix, who hit .423 on the set.
Set two saw more back-and-forth with the Phoenix falling behind early, 5-2. A 12-4 run that saw kills from five separate Phoenix players would give the Phoenix a 14-9 lead. The Phoenix run was countered by a 5-0 run by the Golden Grizzlies to tie the set at 14 apiece. However, back-to-back blocks by T. Wolf and senior Lydia DeWeese would put the Phoenix back in front at 17-14. Another 5-0 run by Oakland would give them a 22-20 lead in the set. However, a 5-1 run capped off by a Maddie Yoss ace would give the Phoenix a 25-23 set victory.
The Phoenix came out strong in the third set, tallying a 6-2 lead before Oakland was forced to use a timeout. Green Bay was able to side out on Oakland's first seven points to extend their lead to 14-7. A 6-2 Oakland run brought the Golden Grizzlies within three at 16-13. Oakland would eventually take a 23-22 lead over the Phoenix, but a DeWeese kill followed by back-to-back kills by freshman Roberta Todd, the second of which was set up by a stellar dig by Junior Vanessa Buman, gave the Phoenix a 25-23 set win and the match.
The No. 4-seeded Phoenix (15-14) move on to face the No. 1-seeded Vikings of Cleveland State in a rematch of last year's championship match. The Vikings took home last year's crown in a five-set thriller. Sunday's championship matchup begins at 1 p.m. CT and will be streamed live on ESPN3.
